Community Disability Service Worker

The Position:
This front-line community disability services role has the responsibility to support and facilitate the development of skills and competencies that will assist persons with disabilities to pursue and fulfil their goals, objectives and aspirations to build their independence. The ideal candidate will have experience with job coaching in a variety of employment settings and will be knowledgeable with providing support to manage emotional, behavioral and/or physical challenges. This position includes providing on-site job coaching and mentorship at community employment locations, based on client needs.
Responsibilities Include:
- Establishing and developing meaningful and healthy relationships and supporting individuals to do the same.
- Assisting individuals to identify personal life goals and aspirations and connecting them with opportunities that will support their fulfillment.
- Promoting skill development to assist individuals to reach their full potential in community, volunteer, social, recreational and employment environments, including providing on-site job coaching and mentorship at community employment placements.
- Promote identification of employment interests and goals, assist with the development of employment skills and provide direct job coaching and support at employment sites.
- Providing behavioral and emotional guidance.
- Assisting with direct care of high needs and/or medically fragile clients including personal care.
- Mentoring and supporting individuals to advocate on their own behalf.
- Completing documentation and reports.
- Adhering to Centra Cam’s Policies and Procedures.
- Attending regular meeting and training as required.
- Supporting individuals at community and employment sites that may operate during evenings and weekends, based on client placement and program needs.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Relevant post-secondary education.
- Relevant Disability Services Certificate, Diploma or courses is an asset.
- Employment Training Specialist certificate or relevant employment courses or experience.
- Behavior Management Training and experience are required.
- Direct front line experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities who require both behavioral, physical and personal care support is required.
- Foundations Training is an asset.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
- Knowledge of Sign Language is an asset.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is an asset.
- Mental Health First Aid Training is an asset.
- First Aid/CPR Certification is an asset.
- Knowledge of Abuse Reporting Protocol and Protection for Persons in Care Act.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of individuals.
- Able to assist individuals with personal care, including lifts, transfers, g-tube feedings, and mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, canes).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word/Excel programs and utilization of a database to record outcomes.
- A positive attitude, initiative and creativity.
- An ability to work in a collaborative team-oriented work environment.
- Demonstrated cultural and ethnic sensitivity.
- Effective observation, interpretive and problem-solving skills.
- A knowledge base of community resources.
- Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required to support client employment placements.
- Flexibility to scheduling and caseload changes.
Other Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license & reliable insured vehicle ($2 million liability) are required for daily use.
- Acceptable Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector.
- Acceptable Driver’s abstract.
- Please be aware this job requires the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, bending, handling/gripping, sitting/standing for extended periods of time, reaching, walking, climbing stairs, crouching/kneeling, twisting, working inside/outside and driving.
Wages are dependent on qualifications, formal education & experience (7.5 hours/day).
