POSITION TITLE: Finance Specialist
LOCATION: Calgary, Hybrid role
POSITION TYPE: Part time, fixed term (maternity leave coverage); approximately 15-25 hours per week
POSITION OVERVIEW:
We're looking for a Finance Specialist to step in and cover a maternity leave, working directly alongside our current Finance Manager during a training and handover period before taking full ownership of the role. This is a hands-on position covering the full cycle of day-to-day financial operations from daily sales and invoicing through to month-end close and year-end reporting.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Enter and process vendor invoices for payment in a timely, accurate manner
- Process credit card payments and reconcile statements against receipts monthly
- Review and verify daily cashouts
- Balance and reconcile weekend coin/cash floats; investigate and resolve discrepancies
- Enter daily sales data from POS into accounting software and clear outstanding transactions
- Act as the go-to resource for store-level staff on sales entry, ringing-in errors, and POS discrepancies
- Prepare and distribute daily sales reports to leadership
- Enter and reconcile inventory data
- Flag and follow up on cost or inventory variances with operations/store management
- Prepare and distribute monthly financial statements to leadership and ownership
- Balance and close month-end books
- Support basic budget-to-actual variance review where requested
- Calculate and distribute bonus information to eligible staff and management
- Prepare and process dividend payments
- Act as primary point of contact for investor financial inquiries
- Maintain strict confidentiality of financial, ownership, and compensation information
- Compile and organize year-end financial data
- Liaise directly with outside accountants to finalize year-end close and support tax filing
- Maintain documentation to support audit and compliance requirements
- Daily cash balancing and reconciliation of the restaurant’s previous business day’s revenue
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- 2-3 years of experience in full-cycle bookkeeping/accounting (AP, AR, reconciliations, month-end close)
- Proficiency with Quickbooks accounting software and ability to learn company-specific systems quickly
- Strong Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables) for reporting and reconciliation work
- Experience with cash handling and reconciliation, ideally in a multi-location or hospitality environment
- High degree of discretion and confidentiality — this role handles dividend, investor, and compensation information
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage overlapping weekly, monthly, and annual deadlines
- Clear, patient communicator who can explain finance/POS issues to non-finance staff
- Comfortable working independently and taking full ownership of the role after the training period
Nice-to-haves:
- Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or business
- Accounting designation (CPA) or actively working toward one
- Experience preparing information for external accountants or supporting a year-end close
- Exposure to investor reporting, dividend processes, or cap table basics
- Experience in the hospitality, restaurant, or bar industry
- Experience stepping into a role via a structured handover/training period from a departing incumbent
Pay: $22.00-$27.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10.0 – 25.0 per week
