Hours of work:
The day shift Dietary Aide works 15.0 hrs. per week for a part-time employee.
The evening shift Dietary Aide works 12.0 hrs. per week for part-time employee.
Salary & Benefits:
The salary will be as per the Home Collective Agreement and Benefits as per Plan Package.
Summary:
The Dietary Aides are to ensure standards are met in Food Service Operations by completing job duties as assigned which include portioning, serving and clean up of meals and snacks to Residents.

Key Responsibilities
The Dietary Aide’s key responsibilities, under the direction of the Nutrition Manager or designate (Director of Care, Cook), are determined by the home and may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Complies with all provincial/long term care regulations and established Food Services department policies and procedures.
- Assists in maintaining the Food Services department in a safe and sanitary manner.
- Provides assistance to the cook in the preparation and service of meals. Must be an effective team player that works well with others.
- Communicates and co-operates with staff, Residents and their families.
- Assists in the preparation and service of beverages, meal and dessert items, nourishment items and catering as assigned.
- Serves meals and beverages, following Residents’ diets and food preferences, using proper portion sizes. Knowledgeable of therapeutic diets.
Key responsibilities (Cont.):
- Assists in receiving and storing incoming food and supplies.
- Assists in monitoring quality of food and supplies received and advises manager of problems.
- Reports food, supply, and equipment needs to Nutrition Manager.
- Follows proper food handling techniques and infection control practices.
- Dates, labels, and stores food properly.
- Completes pre-start up equipment checks as necessary.
- Keeps work area clean and uncluttered, and completes scheduled cleaning duties.
- Maintains cleanliness of floors in the food preparation, dish room, and storage areas.
- Meets scheduled meal and nourishment times.
- Uses equipment and supplies properly. Understands WHMIS and follows health and safety guidelines. Wears the personal protective equipment as per MSDS.
- Sets and cleans dining tables and trays.
- Delivers dietary carts to designated areas.
- Assists in dish and pan washing, storage and cleaning duties.
- Assists with maintaining the security of the department. Maintains floor areas safe while working, caution with water on floors.
- Participates actively in department’s CQI program and any department/home’s committees as requested.
- Participates actively in special occasion and theme meal days.
- Alert Nutrition Manager or designate to concerns and makes recommendations about corrective action.
- Knowledgeable of, and practice, home’s fire safety and emergency programs. Follows and complies with health and safety legislation and department safe job procedures.
- Attends departmental and home’s staff meetings, in-services and other necessary training sessions.
- Assists in the orientation and training of new employees.
Key responsibilities (Cont.):
- Promotes a positive team spirit within the department.
- Maintains good attendance record according to Company policy.
- Is knowledgeable of the Resident’s Bill of Rights.
- Performs other duties as are necessary and appropriate.
Key Relationships
* Reports to: Cook and Nutrition Manager
* Interfaces and builds relationship with: members of the management team, service employees, Nursing Staff, volunteers, Residents and Families.
Qualifications
- Must have successfully completed the Institutional Food Service Worker’s Certificate Program
- Preferences will be given to individuals who have experience in food services in either long term care or chronic/acute health care.
- Must be knowledgeable of the (Provincial) Ontario Food Premises Regulation and Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
- Must be able to read, write and accurately follow written and verbal instructions. Proficiency to be bilingual is an asset.
- Must be physically able to lift and transfer heavy, hot items and stand for majority of shift. There is much repetition in the tasks, must be able to organize time so to vary duties limiting repetitive movements.
