Position Overview
The Assistant Controller will oversee the financial operations of the company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strategic financial planning. This role involves leading the finance team. The Assistant Controller will play a key role in supporting business growth through effective financial management, process improvement, and strategic decision-making.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong analytical skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to mentor and develop team members while collaborating with senior management to drive organizational success.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the accounting team, providing coaching, mentorship, and training as needed.
- Prepare and review financial statements, account reconciliations, monthly analyses, and variance reports.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing activities, including journal entries and related tasks.
- Oversee the general ledger, ensuring accurate subledger reconciliations and account code maintenance.
- Ensure all month-end procedures are followed and financial information is complete, accurate, and submitted within established Group timelines.
- Review monthly revenue accruals and payroll costs for completeness and accuracy.
- Develop, document, and regularly update departmental procedures.
- Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
- Analyze and present monthly financial results to key stakeholders.
- Manage and coordinate the annual budgeting process.
- Work closely with the Head of Finance – Americas, Controllers, Local Managing Directors, and Group Finance.
- Collaborate with business lines and support departments to understand and address their financial requirements.
- Support the development, standardization, and implementation of appropriate internal controls.
- Manage and coordinate the year-end audit and tax return processes.
- Liaise with external auditors and assist with periodic reviews.
- Work with tax consultants to ensure all tax reporting requirements and deadlines are met.
- Review monthly sales tax entries and ensure compliance with other government reporting requirements.
- Participate in the annual Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) filing.
- Manage ad hoc financial requests and projects as required.
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Canadian CPA designation.
- Minimum of five to seven years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within a multinational organization.
- Strong knowledge of the full accounting cycle.
- Strong technical accounting and finance skills, with the ability to analyze and understand complex financial statements.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, accounting systems, and general information technology.
- Experience implementing new financial or accounting systems.
- Experience working in an international, multi-company environment with multiple currencies.
- Experience managing financial reporting for multiple entities within a corporate group.
- Strong leadership skills, including the ability to coach, mentor, and train team members.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and effectively manage priorities and workload.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and consistently deliver high-quality work.
- Flexible and able to accommodate different time zones across office locations.
- Self-motivated, dependable, committed, and supportive, with a proactive, can-do attitude.
- Professional conduct and sound judgment.
- Fluency in Spanish is considered an asset.
