OPERATIONS/PROJECT SPECIALIST

Summary:
The Operations/Project Specialist will report to the Manager – Operations and will support the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of Catapult’s compost facilities in Aldersyde, Alberta, and Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Regular travel to both sites as well as our head office in downtown Calgary are expected. This role will primarily focus on optimizing existing operations, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and leading small operational improvement projects that enhance productivity, quality, safety, and site performance.
While working on Site(s), the Operations/Project Specialist will also be expected to operate heavy equipment as required, including loader, screener, turner, and skid-steer, and may be responsible for overseeing base operations during the Facility Manager’s absence. This position requires a hands-on leader who can balance operational execution, process improvement, equipment operation, and team support in a dynamic facility environment. Facility personnel in regulated compost operations may also be expected to meet Alberta operator certification expectations, depending on site requirements.
Additionally, the Operations/Project Specialist will work closely with the Director - Assets, Project Management & Development on key corporate initiatives including but not limited to asset inventory, critical capital project delivery and management, and development initiatives as directed. Accordingly, the Operations/Project Specialist will be required to be in our downtown Calgary office as needed (envisioned to be at least one day per week initially). Project management and people leadership skill sets are critical for this role.
Responsibilities:
· Support the overall safe and efficient operation of the facility, including productivity, service, administrative, and operational performance.
· Identify, prioritize, and implement operational improvement projects that optimize existing facility processes, equipment use, material handling, and workflow.
· Coordinate and execute improvement initiatives in collaboration with the Manager – Operations, Facility Manager, and other internal stakeholders.
· Operate heavy equipment as required, including loader, screener, turner, skid-steer, and other site equipment, in a safe and efficient manner.
· Support compost processing activities, including material receiving, blending, turning, screening, stockpiling, and load-out activities.
· Monitor site conditions, production flow, process performance, and equipment utilization to identify issues and opportunities for improvement.
· Support compliance with OH&S legislation, environmental approvals, operating procedures, and applicable corporate requirements.
· Assist with daily operational planning, task coordination, and prioritization to support facility performance and minimize disruption.
· Serve as acting support for base operations and decision-making in the Facility Manager’s absence, as assigned.
· Work closely with Operations Team Leads, Maintenance, Compliance, and other stakeholders to resolve operational issues and implement practical solutions.
· Support preventive maintenance planning, equipment readiness, and coordination of repairs or service as needed.
· Monitor and report on key operational indicators, including production efficiency, downtime, safety, quality, and material throughput.
· Maintain accurate operational records, including production logs, equipment use records, incident documentation, and daily reporting.
· Assist with operational budgeting input, consumables tracking, and identification of cost-saving opportunities.
· Contribute to the planning, executing, monitoring, and closing projects in accordance with Catapult’s tiered Project Management Framework.
· Contribute to the development of project charters, delivery plans, and risk registers for both capital and operational projects.
· Contribute to scope, schedule, and budget tracking for capital and operational projects
· Coordinate projects that enhance or modify existing facilities, equipment, and processes.
· Ensure project activities comply with OH&S legislation, environmental approvals, and other applicable regulatory and corporate requirements.
· Participate in contractor coordination, vendor interface, and site activities where required.
· Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying lessons learned and recommending process changes.
· Represent Catapult professionally in all internal and external operational interactions.

Qualifications:
Technical:
· Minimum five-years in in composting, waste management, industrial operations, heavy equipment operation, or related fields
· Demonstrated experience improving operational processes, supporting facility optimization, or leading small operational projects.
· Heavy equipment experience is required; experience with loader, screener, turner, and skid-steer is an asset.
· Working knowledge of compost facility operations, material handling, and production workflows is preferred.
· Understanding of safety requirements, environmental compliance, and operational best practices in industrial or waste management settings.
· Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
· Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage competing operational demands.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and basic reporting tools.
· Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate operational information clearly.
· Ability to read site maps, operating procedures, and basic technical documentation is an asset.
