Position Summary
The Dock Worker is responsible for the safe and efficient loading, unloading, movement, and organization of freight within a refrigerated transportation and warehousing environment. This role requires the operation of forklifts and yard equipment, including shunting trailers to and from loading bays, while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe dock area. The Dock Worker plays a critical role in ensuring product integrity, inventory accuracy, and on-time freight movement.
Key Responsibilities:
Freight Handling
- Load and unload refrigerated trailers safely and efficiently.
- Verify freight against shipping and receiving documentation.
- Inspect freight for damage and report any discrepancies immediately.
- Ensure proper handling of temperature-sensitive products.
- Secure loads to prevent damage during transportation and storage.
- Stage freight in designated areas for shipment or storage.
Forklift Operation
- Safely operate forklifts and other material handling equipment.
- Conduct daily pre-trip inspections of forklifts and report defects.
- Move pallets, products, and materials throughout the dock and warehouse.
- Maintain certification and operate equipment in accordance with company policies and safety regulations.
Trailer Shunting and Yard Operations
- Safely shunt trailers in and out of loading bays using company equipment.
- Position trailers accurately at dock doors to support loading and unloading operations.
- Conduct pre-use inspections of shunt equipment and trailers.
- Monitor trailer conditions and report any damage or maintenance concerns.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatch, supervisors, and drivers regarding trailer movements.
Dock Organization and Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free dock environment.
- Remove debris, damaged pallets, and waste materials from work areas.
- Ensure freight is properly staged and stored in designated locations.
- Assist with inventory organization and dock space management.
- Support general yard and facility housekeeping as required.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Participate in safety meetings and training programs.
- Report workplace hazards, accidents, incidents, and near misses immediately.
- Maintain food safety and cold chain integrity standards when handling refrigerated products.
Qualifications
Required
- Valid forklift certification or ability to obtain certification.
- Previous experience operating forklifts in a warehouse, dock, or transportation environment.
- Experience loading and unloading trailers.
- Ability to safely shunt trailers using yard equipment.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
Preferred
- Experience in refrigerated transportation, cold storage, or food distribution.
- Knowledge of shipping and receiving procedures.
- Experience using warehouse management or inventory systems.
- Class 1 license
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) on a regular basis.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, and climb throughout the shift.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures, including refrigerated environments.
- Ability to work safely around moving equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday.
