Reporting to the Public Works Foreman, the Seasonal Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy and light-duty equipment in support of road construction and maintenance, including hauling, loading, and snow removal, while ensuring compliance with safety procedures and completing assigned tasks accurately and on time.
Duties and Responsibilities
Equipment Operation & Safety
- Operate equipment safely (excavators, loaders, backhoes, graders, semitrailers, water trucks, snowplows).
- Perform routine assignments in road maintenance and construction.
- Ensure safe loading and unloading of vehicles and equipment.
- Follow proper rigging, hoisting, tie-down, and transportation procedures.
Equipment Maintenance & Record Keeping
- Maintain equipment and vehicles in good housekeeping order.
- Perform basic maintenance
- Maintain accurate records of equipment and work orders as required.
Other Duties
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Public Works Foreman.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating Super B units.
- Valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Class 1 license, maintained for a minimum of 5 years.
- Experience operating truck & pup units, including gravel spreading and piling.
- Snowplow experience is considered an asset.
Skills and Attributes
- Proficient in map reading and maintaining a logbook.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision.
- Reliable and punctual, with strong communication skills and ability to follow direction.
- Basic computer skills for email, maintaining records, and everyday communication.
- Ability to respond to public inquiries in a calm, professional, and friendly manner.
Working Conditions
- This is a full‑time temporary position 4-month term, with the possibility of extension subject to organization needs and performance.
- Regular work schedule of forty-four (44) hours per week; Monday to Thursday (7:00 am to 4:30 pm) and Friday (7:00 am to 3:30 pm)
- This is a unionized position governed by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) collective agreement.
- Requires flexibility in hours due to weather conditions, emergencies, and operational needs.
- Work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures.
- Exposure to elevated levels of noise, dust, and fumes.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 23 kg.
- Physical requirements include bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, and sitting for extended periods.
