The Ontario National branch has a new career opportunity for an Underwriting Senior Specialist for P&C. The purpose of the role is to be the underwriting conscience of the branch and be highly visible while servicing our Ontario National broker partners. You will assess and evaluate more complex Property and Casualty risks and apply strategies and pricing to exceptional underwriting judgement. You’ll be the subject matter expert within your specialized area of expertise. There is an overall accountability to drive profitable growth through quality underwriting, provide expert analysis on the branch’s book of business, and make recommendations on how to improve. As first line of defense to proactively manage the portfolio, you will evaluate, identify and deliver required training for the branch to build underwriter capabilities. You are the go-to technical expert for the branch leader and provide consultative services.
This role is a hybrid role and location will be Markham or Oakville.
What you will do :

Provide coaching, mentoring, and training to a team of Commercial Lines underwriters to develop their underwriting capabilities.

Assist with the underwriting of a portfolio of assigned business and provide support to the underwriting team on complex accounts.

Communicate with brokers on Aviva's strategy and handle calls from brokers, Aviva lawyers, and the Aviva claims team.

Build and maintain relationships with different teams and external partners to provide outstanding support to brokers and customers.

Act as a point of escalation for all underwriters and assist the VP with individual branch strategy and portfolio diversification.

Provide technical analysis and evaluate technical skills for new hires and promotions.

Act as an expert on our wordings representing underwriting for Aviva.

Authorize risks within established authority levels and maintain the quality and profitability of the portfolio.

Contribute to the introduction and communication of pricing, coverage, and product changes.

Help identify areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies and apply remediation strategies as appropriate.

Participate in Underwriting Quality Reviews and provide feedback and training potential as required.

Monitor and control UQR on a monthly basis and review large losses to identify coaching opportunities.

Support maintenance of a compliant underwriting environment in relation to filed rates and rules.

Stay updated on industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes.

Contribute as a subject matter expert for branch learning and development.

Conduct and lead monthly underwriting meetings and deliver new product coverage.
What you will bring :

Post-secondary education in Business or a related field.

CIP/FCIP preferred.
-
8-10 years of experience in underwriting in Commercial Insurance.

Excellent leadership and coaching skills.

Expert knowledge of underwriting, pricing, and products in key segments.

Comprehensive knowledge of underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, and computer workflow procedures.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, RTM, and other related systems.

Ability to develop long-term relationships with brokers and customers.

Self-motivated and proactive in pursuing potential business opportunities.

Strong communication and negotiation skills.
