On behalf of a client, SEM is seeking an experienced Transmission Engineer to support a major hydroelectric utility in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Based primarily in St. John’s, NL, this position will support the planning, design and execution of capital and operating projects associated with transmission infrastructure throughout the province. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Civil or Electrical Engineer looking to work on significant utility infrastructure projects within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
The Role
The successful candidate will support transmission and distribution engineering projects through all stages of development, from conceptual and pre-feasibility studies through detailed design, procurement and construction.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Performing technical engineering analysis of new and existing transmission line infrastructure
- Completing transmission line design and analysis using PLS-CADD and related PLS software
- Supporting projects from conceptual design and pre-feasibility through final design and execution
- Preparing engineering estimates, work orders, material and equipment orders, and contract documents
- Supporting tender evaluations and recommendations for contract awards
- Providing construction management support for assigned projects
- Coordinating safety and environmental requirements during project execution
- Supporting capital budget applications, estimates and technical justifications
- Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary internal and external project teams
What We're Looking For
Candidates should have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering
- Minimum 5 years of engineering experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience within the utility industry
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with PEGNL
- Experience with the PLS-CADD Software Suite, including PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER
- Experience with transmission line design, implementation and troubleshooting
- Experience developing and managing engineering and/or construction contracts
- Experience preparing engineering project estimates
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- Valid Canadian driver’s licence and ability to travel periodically within Newfoundland and Labrador
Location: St. John’s, NL
Anticipated Start: October 2026
Initial Term: Approximately 12 months, with potential for annual extensions
Schedule: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Travel: Periodic travel within Newfoundland and Labrador may be required
