Reporting to the Director of Corporate Policy and Strategic Initiatives, the incumbent will:

  • Work with internal and external partners and stakeholders to develop and implement policies and programs to assist the Region of Durham prepare for, and respond to, the effects of climate change
  • Lead all aspects of work relating to the Region's key community climate mitigation and adaption plans, including: Towards Resilience, Community Climate Adaptation Plan (2016), and the Durham Community Energy Plan, The Clean Energy Economy in Durham: Seizing the Opportunity (2018)
  • Provide strategic support to the Durham Region Roundtable on Climate Change (DRRCC)
  • Provide advice to Regional Council and staff on issues related to climate change, sustainability and the environment
  • Collaborate with and provide leadership and guidance to local municipal staff, industry, businesses, energy sector, academic partners and other key stakeholders
  • Identify measures, strategies and best practices to develop short, medium and long-term objectives to achieve the Region's sustainability goals
  • Represent the Region in the community to strengthen partnerships, identify innovative funding opportunities and advance areas of common interest
  • Develop, track and report on key performance indicators
  • Lead the Region's participation in local, provincial, national and international sustainability initiatives
  • Design education and awareness programs
  • Analyze program delivery needs, prepare and manage RFP processes to acquire consultants as required and oversee their work
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures
  • Manage the sustainability program budget

The successful applicant will possess:

  • A university degree in Environmental Science or a related discipline, preferably with a climate change or environmental sustainability focus (master's degree considered a strong asset)
  • A minimum of five years' experience in a related position
  • Expert knowledge of climate science, federal and provincial legislation, policies and positions related to the environment and climate change
  • Knowledge of the Durham Region Strategic Plan, municipal budget and planning processes, Regional Council reporting procedures, national and international municipal climate programs and initiatives
  • Effective supervisory, coaching and motivational skills
  • Exceptional leadership, interpersonal and facilitation skills
  • Strong partnership development, collaboration and creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent report writing, presentation, analytical and research skills and ability to respond effectively to rapidly changing issues
  • Ability to work both independently and as a strong team member
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities
  • Political acuity to work through complex, contentious and politically sensitive issues
  • A valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence and access to a reliable vehicle

Salary: $90,014 to $112,517 per annum
