Summary
The Marine Superintendent / Relief Engineer is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the Company’s marine vessels and offshore assets. The position combines shore-based marine management responsibilities with onboard engineering duties as required, including serving as Relief Engineer during vessel operations, mobilizations, drydocking’s and maintenance periods.
The position will work closely with the Engineering and Marine Operations groups to ensure vessels are maintained and operated to the highest standards of safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and operational readiness.
Job Responsibilities
- Marine Superintendent
- Provide day-to-day marine oversight and technical support for assigned vessels.
- Support the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of vessels in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
- Monitor vessel performance, maintenance, reliability, fuel consumption, and operational readiness.
- Provide technical and operational support to Masters, Chief Engineers, and vessel crews.
- Maintain regular communication with vessels and provide guidance on operational, technical, and maintenance matters.
- Review vessel reports, defect lists, planned maintenance information, fuel consumption, and other operational data.
- Assist in identifying recurring equipment failures and developing corrective actions.
- Support vessel mobilizations and demobilizations for cable installation and other offshore projects.
- Coordinate with vessel crews, project teams, shipyards, vendors, class, flag, and regulatory authorities as required.
- Participate in vessel inspections, audits, surveys, and compliance activities.
- Assist with the preparation and execution of drydockings, refits, repairs, and major maintenance projects.
- Assist with vessel budgets, maintenance forecasts, spare parts requirements, and capital expenditure planning.
- Support procurement of marine equipment, machinery, spares, and services.
- Review technical specifications and vendor proposals for marine equipment and systems.
- Monitor outstanding defects and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
- Assist with investigations of machinery failures, incidents, near misses, and other operational events.
- Ensure lessons learned are communicated across the fleet.
Relief Engineer
When assigned onboard, the employee will serve as Relief Engineer and assume the responsibilities of the Marine Engineer.
Responsibilities will include:
- Take overall responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel's engineering department.
- Ensure all propulsion, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and auxiliary systems are operated and maintained safely.
- Supervise engineering personnel and ensure effective watchkeeping and maintenance practices.
- Manage the vessel's Planned Maintenance System and ensure maintenance is completed appropriately and on schedule.
- Monitor machinery condition and identify potential failures before they affect vessel operations.
- Ensure adequate spares, consumables, tools, and technical resources are available onboard.
- Maintain accurate engineering records, logs, reports, and regulatory documentation.
- Ensure compliance with Class, Flag, Port State, ISM, and other applicable requirements.
- Coordinate machinery repairs and troubleshooting with shore-based technical personnel and contractors.
- Participate in emergency response and drills as required.
- Support vessel maneuvering, DP operations, cable operations, and other marine activities from an engineering perspective.
- Provide engineering support during cable installation, cable repair, ROV, survey, and subsea operations.
- Ensure machinery and systems required for critical project operations remain operational and properly maintained.
- Coordinate with the Master and project team regarding engineering limitations, risks, and operational requirements.
- Ensure safe isolation, lockout/tagout, and permit-to-work practices are followed.
- Manage engineering personnel performance, training, and development.
- Provide technical handover to and from relieving Chief Engineers.
- Vessel Mobilization and Project Support
The position will provide technical and marine support during vessel mobilizations and offshore projects, including:
- Review vessel readiness prior to mobilization.
- Assist with project-specific equipment installation and integration.
- Support installation and commissioning of cable machinery, ROV systems, ploughs, survey equipment, and associated systems.
- Coordinate with project and vessel teams to identify technical requirements and constraints.
- Participate in mobilization meetings, readiness reviews, and project kick-offs.
- Support troubleshooting of vessel and project equipment during offshore operations.
- Assist with project demobilization and post-project closeout.
- Drydocking and Major Maintenance
- Assist in developing vessel drydock specifications and work scopes.
- Review shipyard quotations and technical proposals.
- Support planning and execution of drydockings, refits, and major repairs.
- Monitor shipyard work and ensure agreed specifications and quality standards are met.
- Coordinate with Class, Flag, manufacturers, contractors, and shipyard representatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve vessel reliability and reduce lifecycle costs.
- Ensure all required documentation is completed following drydock and major maintenance activities.
- Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across Company vessels.
- Ensure vessel operations comply with applicable Flag State, Class, IMO, ISM, and other regulatory requirements.
- Participate in internal and external audits and inspections.
- Support incident and near-miss investigations.
- Identify hazards and implement appropriate risk controls.
- Ensure Company procedures and the vessel Safety Management System are followed.
- Promote environmental compliance and pollution prevention.
- Support emergency preparedness and response activities.
- Fleet Technical Support
- Provide technical input into vessel maintenance strategies and long-term asset plans.
- Identify opportunities for standardization across the fleet.
- Develop and maintain technical standards and procedures where required.
- Evaluate machinery upgrades, equipment replacements, and reliability improvements.
- Support condition monitoring and predictive maintenance initiatives.
- Assist with lifecycle planning for major machinery and systems.
- Provide technical input to new vessel construction, vessel acquisition, conversion, and modification projects as required.
Requirements
- Valid Chief Engineer Certificate (a 2 Engineering may be considered if other requirements are met)
- Experience operating and maintaining diesel propulsion, electrical generation, auxiliary, hydraulic, and marine systems.
- Strong understanding of vessel maintenance and Planned Maintenance Systems.
- Experience with Class, Flag State, ISM, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Experience supervising and managing marine engineering personnel.
- Ability to work effectively with Masters, vessel crews, project teams, contractors, and shore-based management.
- Willingness and ability to travel and work offshore/onboard vessels as required.
- Experience with DP vessels
- Experience managing drydocking’s and major refits.
Work Conditions
· The position is based out of the Halifax office and is based on a 40hr work week
· While at sea as a Relief Engineer, an uplift will be provided.
