The Research Assistant (RA) will work in the Marine Mineral Resources Laboratory (Dept. of Earth Sciences), under the direction of Dr. John Jamieson. The RA will perform various tasks associated with the general functioning of the lab, and ongoing research projects. Specific tasks will include curating a sample collection of rocks collected from the seafloor from various ocean basins; designing and populating a relational database containing sample metadata; designing a sample storage and labelling system; ordering sample storage containers; photographing and describing samples; building a GIS-based interface for the sample collection; designing a website for the Marine Mineral Resources research group; designing a research group logo. The RA will also serve as administrative support for the Canadian Consortium for Ocean Drilling. Duties will include maintaining the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Canada website and monitoring the IODP Canada Gmail account, and responding to enquiries and other related duties as required.

Experience (up to 1 year) in a related field and/or research experience is required. Completion of an undergraduate degree in geology; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Experience with Geographical Information Systems is required. Specific experience with data management and the design of relational databases is also a requirement. Knowledge of photography and experience with webpage and graphic design are assets.
