CLA position in Greek and Roman Studies with specialization in Greek History; additional focus in Greek language
The Department of Greek and Roman Studies at McMaster University invites applications for a two-year Contractually Limited Appointment (CLA) position in Greek History and Greek language at the level of Assistant Professor. The position will commence on August1 st , 2026. At the time of appointment, applicants must have a Ph.D. in Classics, with evidence of research productivity and evidence of teaching excellence at all levels. Experience in graduate-level language teaching is an asset.
The Department of Greek and Roman studies is home to both an undergraduate program and graduate program (MA; PhD). The programs are traditional in nature, offering courses and supervision in all areas of the discipline. The department combines a strong commitment to pedagogy and has a strong research orientation. The successful candidate should be able to teach Greek History courses in translation at all undergraduate levels, as well as Greek language courses at all undergraduate and graduate levels and should have a keen interest in participating in the collaborative community of the department. Position Description
Area of specialization : Greek History.
Areas of competence: At the time of appointment, applicants must have a Ph.D. in Classics with evidence of strong teaching performance, both in-person and online, and research productivity. The focus of the position is on teaching. Courses taught will include, but may not be limited to, a selection from the following, aligning with the candidate’s expertise: Introduction to Greek and Roman History, Ancient Law, Greek Intellectual Revolution, fourth-year undergraduate seminars in areas of Greek History and Culture, all levels of undergraduate and graduate Greek language. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a willingness and ability to contribute to the department’s collegial and collaborative intellectual community as well as the university-wide inclusive excellence goals and priorities.
Responsibilities: The starting date for the appointment is scheduled for August 1st, 2026. Duration of the appointment is until July 31st, 2028.
Duties include 21 units (7 semester-long courses) of teaching per academic year and additional administrative responsibilities. The breakdown of the load is 80/20 (teaching/service).
