Job Summary
The Maintenance Mechanic/Millwright is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of mechanical equipment and systems within a chemical manufacturing facility. This role is critical to ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production equipment, processing systems, pumps, compressors, conveyors, agitators, and other industrial machinery.
Working in a safety-sensitive environment, the Maintenance Mechanic/Millwright performs preventive and predictive maintenance activities, responds to equipment breakdowns, and collaborates with Operations and Engineering teams to minimize downtime and support continuous improvement initiatives. The successful candidate demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude, a commitment to safety and environmental compliance, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain plant equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
- Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on production and facility equipment.
- Record and report spare parts usage to support inventory accuracy and availability.
- Ensure equipment is properly lubricated and maintained according to preventive maintenance schedules.
- Set up and prepare equipment for production runs to ensure on-time startup and optimal performance.
- Conduct regular inspections of operating equipment to identify potential issues and maintain product quality standards.
- Troubleshoot equipment failures and perform repairs with minimal disruption to production.
- Adjust, repair, and replace worn or damaged components as required.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with production and supervisory teams to optimize downtime and resource utilization.
- Evaluate maintenance improvements and equipment modifications to ensure desired performance outcomes are achieved.
- Report ongoing equipment concerns and recurring issues to the Maintenance Manager or Supervisor.
- Perform shop-based repairs and fabrication work as required.
- Operate hand tools, machine tools, and welding equipment to repair or fabricate components.
- Troubleshoot basic electrical issues, including replacing fuses, changing electric motors, and interpreting electrical drawings and schematics.
- Document maintenance activities, repairs, incidents, and equipment performance in the maintenance log before the end of each shift.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company standards and safety regulations.
- Participate in equipment installations, upgrades, and machine modifications.
- Support annual and semi-annual equipment and spare parts inventory activities.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by the Maintenance Manager.
Note: Any unplanned equipment shutdown exceeding 30 minutes must be reported immediately to the Supervisor or Production Supervisor during off-shifts.
Qualifications & Skills
- Journeyperson Millwright certification or equivalent industrial maintenance experience preferred.
- Experience working in a manufacturing, industrial, chemical processing, or related environment.
- Ability to operate machine tools such as lathes, grinders, drill presses, and welding equipment.
- Working knowledge of fabrication, machining, and welding techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation.
- Understanding of electrical systems and the ability to troubleshoot basic electrical faults.
- Ability to diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate corrective actions with minimal supervision.
- Experience overhauling and rebuilding industrial equipment.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively manage workload priorities.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to influence and provide leadership during off-shift operations when required.
- Working knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical handling procedures.
- Forklift Operator Certification and TDG Certification are considered assets.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Ensure all equipment is properly locked out and tagged out (LOTO) prior to maintenance activities.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and protective clothing.
- Maintain housekeeping standards by keeping work areas clean, organized, and free of hazards.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and potential hazards to supervision.
- Ensure maintenance activities comply with company procedures, regulatory requirements, and environmental standards.
- Contribute to a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence.
- Forklift Operator Certification and TDG Certification are considered assets.
Shift Requirements
- This position works 5 - 6 days per week (Monday – Saturday)
- This will eventually be a NIGHT shift role.
- There is a shift premium associated with all afternoon and night shifts.
- Flexibility is required. Training for the first few months will be on DAY or AFTERNOON SHIFT.
