SUMMARY:
As a member of Ka-Na-Chi-Hih Healing Lodge, the Outreach and Engagement Worker will serve as the point of contact for individuals attending the Walking With Purpose program and will provide continuous support to youth on justice restoration, gang prevention, and anti-bullying. The role is crucial in facilitating the prevention and intervention services for youth, conducting assessments, collaborating with youth on their goals and needs in the program, and providing advocacy and linkages for youth to assist with justice restoration. Additionally, the position will engage in outreach efforts in Thunder Bay and Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities to obtain referrals and spread awareness of the Walking With Purpose program for youth involved in various levels of the criminal justice system.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
- Leading aftercare services that are either preventative or interventive depending on the needs of the youth and developing new material/linkages that best fits current case loads.
- Developing, facilitating, and assessing preventative and interventive programs and workshops provided to youth in the walking with purpose program.
- Frequent communication with and some travel to the 49 NAN communities and appropriate organizations to provide awareness of the walking with purpose program, establish connections with members for referrals, provide preventative workshops to community members or interventive programming to walking with purpose youth that best fit their goals and needs.
- Inputting data and case notes into AMIS for data collection purposes.
- Provide assistance when and where needed for Walking With Purpose programming needs.
- Provide support and recommendations to the Manager of Healing and Wellness Initiatives and Program Facilitator during programming.
- Provide On-Call support (including weekends and holidays) on a pre-scheduled rotational basis.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Outreach and Engagement Worker is under the day-to-day Supervision of the Manager of Healing and Wellness Initiatives with further accountability to the overall performance to the Director of Treatment Services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in social services, psychology, counselling or a related field. Additional certifications or training in addiction counselling, crisis intervention or youth services.
- Previous experience working with youth in a social service, mental health or criminal justice setting, preferably in intake coordinator or case management roles. Knowledge of substance abuse issues, adolescent development, trauma informed care and evidence-based modalities.
- Preferred with 3 years' experience working with First Nation communities/Diploma with five years working with First Nation communities.
- Experience in working with indigenous youth, families and communities
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Demonstrate excellent organizational skills
- Must be able to maintain Confidentiality
- Ability to speak a NAN language is an asset
