George Weston Limited’s (GWL) Risk Advisory group is focused on delivering innovative, valuable and effective Business Risk Management, Consulting, Assurance and Compliance solutions designed to support George Weston Limited Corporate Centre, Weston Foods & Choice Properties REIT. In addition to the Business Risk Management program at the GWL Corporate Centre, the Risk Advisory group also owns and manages Business Risk Management program at Weston Foods and Choice Properties.
GWL’s Risk Advisory team is passionate about collaborating with the business to build an insightful and robust Business Risk Management program to evolve the current state risk identification, monitoring, mitigation activities and reporting.
Reporting to the Vice President & Chief Risk Officer (CRO), the Director, Business Risk Management will take ownership and accountability of the Business Risk Management framework and activities within the Risk Advisory Group and develop a team and program to deliver world-class solutions to the organization.
GWL is looking for an individual with entrepreneurial and business-oriented mindset , who is self-driven and possesses the right executive presence and interpersonal skills to proactively engage with stakeholders, senior leadership and the Board in risk discussions that affect the achievement of strategic objectives.
Work closely with business leaders and teams across GWL, Choice Properties and Weston Foods to identify key business risks, including emerging trends, assist in development of mitigation activities which are meaningful and practical for the businesses, and validate and monitor the business risk responses and risk profiles on an ongoing basis.
Proactively develop and own relationships with key stakeholders in the business to ensure we are adaptable to changing business needs and risks and adding value in the right direction
Develop and execute a road map to evolve the Business Risk Management programs across all three entities to enhance the risk identification, evaluation, monitoring and reporting processes.
Lead risk workshops and meetings with business stakeholders and senior leadership across all three entities, including delivering presentations around key risks, mitigation and action items.
Evaluate the effectiveness of risk mitigation plans across the business, developing, implementing and driving plans for improvements as appropriate
Identify and develop key risk indicators across business units and establish monitoring protocols
Conduct modelling and stress testing for risk scenarios
Develop reporting materials for the Audit Committees and Senior Leadership meetings for all entities, including presentation of key risks, mitigations and action plans at the meetings
Effectively liaise with the Risk Advisory Team’s Assurance, Consulting and Compliance functions to align initiatives and ensure appropriate coverage
Champion client specific initiatives to enhance the quality and value of our service delivery including benchmarking, internal / external research, industry events, thought leadership, relationship building, training & competency development
Undergraduate degree in business or other related discipline, MBA preferred but not necessary
7+ years of experience in a business function role such as operations and strategy or experience in corporate governance, legal or risk consulting (experience at Big4 firms is preferred but not necessary)
3+ years of experience in a supervisory capacity effectively developing and leading teams
Strong business acumen, including an ability connect the dots between the business strategy, tactics, risks, and control environment
Superior communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders at all levels
Proven report writing and presentation skills with attention to detail
Proven problem-solver, with an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset and self-starter with a strong work ethic and ‘no-excuses’ mentality
Foundational understanding of risk management theory and practice, and of strategic, operational, financial, compliance, and information technology, risks and controls
Knowledge of governance and risk frameworks such as ISO and COSO is preferred
Certification in risk management or related field is an asset such as CRM, PMP, CPA
Passion and exceptional desire to make an impact on the business and community
Highly proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills
