The Bookstore Manager supervises all aspects of retail business in the campus bookstores including the acquisition of textbooks and course materials for the campus bookstores and the online store.
The Manager provides direction and oversight of all functions at the university bookstore, including staffing, supervision, development of store staff, maintenance of sales and inventory records, store layout and programs/projects.
The incumbent monitors the financial performance of the store, keeping track of revenues and expenses to ensure profitability. The Manager provides regular reports, ensuring the bookstore is exceeding sales expectations, keeping margins on target and adhering to the expense budget provided by Financial Services and Ancillary Services
- Completion of a two (2) year diploma in Business Administration or other related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Five (5) years of related experience in a bookstore and/or retail environment in a management or leadership position.
- Demonstrated experience in purchasing and inventory management, preferably in a bookstore environment.
- Demonstrated experience in the publishing industry – particularly in the academic division.
- Must have strong supervisory skills, specifically in the areas of employee development, including performance management and team building.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship building and conflict resolution skills.
- Familiarity with computerized retail environments and bookstore inventory management systems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Possesses and inspires a high level of customer service in a retail environment.
- Very strong computer skills are essential with an emphasis on knowledge of enterprise database systems and database reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Banner, FAST, and general knowledge and POS experience is required.
- Capable of cash management, daily reconciliation, budget management and forecasting.
- A high level of personal effectiveness in the workplace, including the ability to work efficiently under pressure, to respond appropriate to challenging situations, and to achieve objectives within deadlines.
- Ability to prioritize, organize and deliver a complex workload under pressure adhering to strict deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with academic and administrative colleagues.
- Customer service experience.
- Knowledge of a broad range of issues involved in cross-border and international trade (duty, customs, brokerage).
- Ability to work flexible and varied hours (evenings, weekends, holidays and expanded daily hours) as required.
