HEALTH SCIENCES NORTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Temporary, Full-Time (2 Year Contract)
Reporting to the Manager, Research Capacity and Health Innovation, the Research Facilitator will take a leading role to 1) support the development of project proposals, 2) assist the development of collaborative approaches to research, 3) manage and coordinate the submission and review processes of grants, 4) support the ongoing implementation of projects, and 5) monitor project progress for physicians, researchers, clinicians and scientists who are actively involved in research.
The Research Facilitator reviews and analyzes proposals to determine regulatory, financial, legal, intellectual property and contractual implications of funding. The Facilitator assists investigators in identifying potential funding opportunities and provides technical support for grant writing and interprets and extracts appropriate information from research protocols or proposals to develop essential regulatory documents. The Research Facilitator is responsible for the management of all research files for the duration of the study or grant to ensure compliance with legislation and applicable policies regarding research.
The Research Facilitator:
Provides support to researchers for operational processes such as managing regulatory requirements, departmental approvals, funding requirements, etc.
Serves as a liaison by clearly communicating and coordinating with outside sponsors or granting agencies and their representatives for studies on a regular basis and keeps the Manager abreast of essential/important information relating to the status of all studies.
Works collaboratively with researchers to ensure processes are in place for the effective management of research accounts, internal control processes are in place to manage expenditures and tracking of research funds; compliance with sponsor/funding agency terms and conditions.
Ensures that appropriate accounting reporting methods and processes for the financial management of research funds for researchers are maintained.
Monitors and reviews expenditure transactions for compliance.
Responds to questions regarding year-end sponsor statement and ensures financial statement are reviewed, signed and submitted
Works with others to ensure that all conditions of the sponsor/funding agencies are met (i.e. invoicing, reporting, requirements, certifications, etc.)
Liaises with others to solve post-award related issues such as over expenditures, sub-agreements, extensions, end dates, terminations, change in status, eligibility, conflict of interest, etc.
Facilitates the set up and coordination of research projects and ensures monitoring and reporting arrangements are followed.
Reviews applications/proposals for completeness including requisite signatures, budget, scope of work, supporting documentation and departmental approvals
Remains current with changes in research policies and regulations by actively participating in team sharing and learning activities
Serves as a resource to researchers in staying abreast with current funding trends
Identifies, develops and maintains a service excellence model based on the principles of continuous improvement
Maintains spreadsheets and databases of current and historical information that would include tracking, organizing and maintaining documents such as project applications, contracts/agreements, publications
Conducts compliance reviews of research administration systems and processes and recommends improvements
Contributes to research administration activities (e.g., development of templates, policies and guidelines to be used within the Research Services Office, assistance with the development of improved REB processes etc.)
Education / Certification(s)
Undergraduate degree; graduate degree preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered;
Experience / Special Skills / Training
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in research administration or financial administration
Thorough understanding of the principles of service excellence and demonstrated ability to deliver superior customer service
Solid understanding of research funding opportunities and guidelines
Knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting an asset
Excellent organizational skills including time-management and well-developed multi-tasking skills with keen attention to detail
Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, balancing competing deadlines and priorities
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Related experience in the development of research proposals, publications, grant applications and/or contracts, including project logistics and budget development Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access and other database systems), and internet/intranet.
A professional demeanour, people skills and the ability to interact, communicate with all levels of support, administrative, management, clinicians and researchers
Proven verbal and written communication skills for internal and external communication; excellent skills in written and spoken English; exceptional spelling and grammatical skills required with advanced editing and proofreading skills.
