Heer Law specializes in providing intellectual property law, intellectual property litigation, patent agent and trademark agent services. We are an established intellectual property law firm located in downtown Toronto. The firm has experienced strong annual revenue growth over the past four years and anticipates that the firm will again double over the next three years.
The Role
We are looking for a motivated Legal Assistant with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and proven client service skills to join our firm. This position offers a unique learning experience while providing key support to our professionals, focusing on litigation in the Federal Court and Ontario Superior Court of Justice and pre-litigation disputes, as well as patent, trademark and design prosecution, including docketing and managing due dates and other related tasks.
Experience:
- 1 to 6 years as a Legal Assistant, IP Clerk, or similar role
- Relevant experience in a legal services environment
- Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook
Responsibilities:
- Supporting professionals in litigation matters before the Federal Court and Ontario Superior Court of Justice, as well as in pre-litigation disputes
- Preparing routine correspondence using standard precedents
- Preparing reports of patent, trademark and industrial design/design patent notices
- Assisting with reports of office actions and submissions for filing with CIPO and USPTO (under the supervision of a professional)
- Responding to clients and following up with CIPO and the USPTO
- Docketing, managing due dates, and electronically filing documents
- Tracking and entering disbursements on client files
- Other general administrative tasks
Qualifications:
- Experience in IP, Civil, and/or Commercial litigation is required
- Legal Assistant Diploma/Certificate or Law Clerk Diploma is preferred
- Other post-secondary education is an asset
- Experience working in patent and trademark law preferred
- Experience working with accounting software (e.g., PCLaw, Soluno) preferred
- Experience working with docketing software (e.g., DocketTrak) preferred
- Strong English communications skills, both written and oral
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize incoming assignments from multiple professionals
- Organized, attention to detail, accurate document production
- Professional, polite, friendly and a team player
