Overall Job Objectives
The Cook is responsible for supporting the daily food preparation operations in the central kitchen of our Bagel & Café store. This role ensures the consistent preparation of high-quality ingredients used in the café, while maintaining high standards of hygiene, safety, and organization. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, efficient, and capable of following strict hygiene regulations and operational protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation Tasks
- Wash, peel, cut, and portion vegetables and other ingredients according to recipes.
- Prepare specific fillings and mixes (e.g. salad, cream cheese, bacon jam, etc.) according to standard recipes.
- Slice and portion meat and cheese with precision.
- Label and date all prepared food items and containers.
- Follow portion control, consistency, and quality standards at all times.
Organization and Hygiene
- Keep the workstation clean and sanitized throughout the shift.
- Ensure all kitchen surfaces, equipment, and tools are washed, sanitized, and stored properly.
- Comply with the hygiene checklist and kitchen sanitation protocols.
- Ensure proper food storage and refrigeration according to safety guidelines (e.g., FIFO method, correct labeling).
- Wear appropriate uniform, including gloves and hair covering, and follow hand-washing protocol frequently.
Efficiency and Responsibility
- Be punctual, focused, and efficient during food preparation hours.
- Follow assigned tasks with precision and avoid distractions (e.g., no phone use during working hours).
- Collaborate respectfully with team members and communicate clearly with the supervisor or kitchen lead.
- Notify the supervisor immediately about any shortages in ingredients or issues with kitchen tools/equipment.
- Follow daily checklists and ensure that the preparation area is left clean, labeled, and stocked for the next shift.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in food preparation or commercial kitchens is an asset.
- Knowledge of hygiene and food safety standards.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow recipes and instructions accurately.
- Ability to work efficiently and calmly under pressure.
- Positive attitude and team-oriented approach.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Valid Food Handler Certificate is a plus.
