Job description

The Silva Lab is seeking a Research Assistant to support our research program on brain health across mid- and late-life. The lab focuses on the physiological mechanisms of neuroplastic and myelin adaptations to physical activity and exercise, as well as the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on myelin integrity, the contribution of cardiometabolic burden to neurodegeneration, and the development of novel biomarkers for early detection, with a particular commitment to neuroprotection in underrepresented populations who face elevated dementia risk. In this role, you will help organize and quality-check multisite MRI data, maintain tracking systems, and contribute to analyses, manuscripts, and presentations within a collaborative, equity-focused, multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to

Organize, label, and securely manage multisite MRI data across repeated study visits, keeping files and records complete, consistent, and readily accessible to the team.
Review incoming MRI data for completeness and basic quality, document any issues, and maintain up-to-date tracking logs for participants, visits, and data status (received, processed, analysis-ready).
Contribute to research deliverables by summarizing relevant literature, supporting analyses and the preparation of figures and tables, and helping to write and revise manuscripts for journal submission.
Assist with the preparation of posters and conference presentations.
Perform other research tasks as directed by the Principal Investigator.

Qualifications/skills required

Undergraduate degree in a relevant field, or combination of education and experience.
Exposure to neuroimaging research and MRI data concepts, such as common sequences and outputs, quality control principles, data formats (DICOM, NIfTI), and neuroimaging pipelines.
Foundational knowledge of statistics and quantitative methods, including regression, longitudinal and repeated-measures designs, data cleaning, and interpretation of results.
Programming experience in at least one language commonly used in research (R and/or Python), along with basic command-line and bash scripting skills for automating data processing and managing files; comfort using reproducible workflows such as scripts, documentation, and version control (preferred).
Understanding of clinical research practices, including participant-based studies, data confidentiality, and research ethics; experience with health data is an asset.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple datasets, track progress, and follow standardized procedures.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, including experience contributing to literature reviews, reports, abstracts, or manuscripts.
Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team across sites.
