Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Earthworks Foreman to lead and oversee large-scale earthmoving and construction projects. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, extensive construction and earthworks experience, and proficiency with industry-standard management and technical software. This role involves supervising crews, ensuring project quality, maintaining safety standards, and managing project timelines and budgets. The Earthworks Foreman will play a critical role in coordinating activities on-site to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to client specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise and lead earthworks crews on a daily basis.
- Assign tasks and monitor employee performance and productivity.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, and accountability.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job training to crew members.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations when required.
Safety
- Lead daily toolbox meetings and safety discussions.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company safety policies, WorkSafeBC regulations, and project-specific safety requirements.
- Identify workplace hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure workers are using the appropriate PPE and safe work procedures.
- Report and investigate incidents, near misses, and safety concerns.
- Stop unsafe work when necessary.
Operations
- Coordinate and oversee all phases of earthworks including:
- Site preparation
- Clearing and grubbing
- Excavation
- Cut and fill operations
- Rough and fine grading
- Trenching
- Backfilling
- Road building
- Site servicing
- Erosion and sediment control
- Ensure work is completed according to project drawings, specifications, and schedule.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, grade stakes, and survey information.
- Coordinate with survey crews to maintain proper grades and elevations.
- Plan daily work activities and equipment requirements.
Equipment & Materials
- Coordinate equipment usage to maximize efficiency.
- Ensure equipment inspections are completed.
- Report equipment maintenance requirements.
- Coordinate material deliveries and ensure adequate supplies are available.
- Monitor fuel usage and equipment utilization.
Quality Control
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with project specifications.
- Verify grades, elevations, and compaction requirements.
- Address deficiencies promptly.
- Maintain high workmanship standards.
Communication
- Maintain regular communication with the Superintendent and Project Manager.
- Coordinate work with subcontractors and other trades.
- Provide daily progress updates.
- Participate in project meetings as required.
- Resolve field issues efficiently.
Administration
- Complete daily reports, timesheets, and production tracking.
- Maintain accurate records of labour, equipment, and materials.
- Assist with scheduling and manpower planning.
- Document delays, weather impacts, and site issues.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in earthworks or heavy civil construction, including proven experience supervising crews on earthmoving projects.
- Extensive knowledge of excavation, grading, underground utilities, cut and fill operations, and heavy equipment.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, survey layouts, schematics, and construction drawings.
- Experience with construction estimating, project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource management.
- Proficient in construction management software such as Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, and other industry-standard applications.
- Demonstrated knowledge of quality control procedures, safety management, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience coordinating site logistics, equipment utilization, subcontractors, and field crews to meet project schedules and productivity goals.
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (Class 1 or 3 is considered an asset).
- First Aid certification is considered an asset.
