OVERVIEW
Our Child and Youth Mental Health Program provides child and youth workers a unique opportunity to grow their career and leadership experience. Here staff have the opportunity to improve the mental health of children and youth to 18 years of age by providing specialized youth and family-centred care. We focus on the whole person, to support youth and families to cope, develop, grow, thrive and transform, leveraging strengths of the family. This dynamic, community oriented program has a team who are committed to learning and providing excellent client care. You will work with a diverse interprofessional team.
CYWs in the Outpatient Child & Youth Program are responsible for the provision of comprehensive child and youth behavioural counselling within an interdisciplinary team. Duties include assessment of children and youth and their families, treatment and disposition planning.Assessment will occur in the emergency department and outpatient setting to support meeting the needs of the patient where they are at. Primarily, this role will focus on supporting assessments in the emergency department. The CYW will also be trained in Building Bridges and T7E Inpatient Child and Youth Mental Health Unit to provide support as needed, based on operational needs.
What to expect:
As a member of the Child and Youth Outpatient Mental Health team, you will grow your practice by:
- Working with the interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive assessments, system navigation, resource planning, treatment and safety planning of children and youth presenting to the emergency department.
- Support the warm handover of patients to the Child and Youth Inpatient Unit and facilitate transfer packages to other facilities as needed.
- Working with the interdisciplinary team to provide behavioural counselling, support, assessment and safety plans for clients with school avoidance who attend the day treatment program. This includes support to families and or support networks in collaboration with the student.
- Working in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team in planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment care, case coordination, and transition plans in and out of day treatment service.
- Providing group facilitation and health teaching to students in the day treatment program.
- Applying knowledge of mental health, school avoidance, process, and clinical judgmentin the provision of safe, competent, compassionate, evidence-informed and client-centered quality care.
- Sharing knowledge and expertise with others, while advocating for and promoting health and well-being of clients.
- Caring for your clients as part of a respectful, collaborative interprofessional care team.
- Workingwith the MGH team to advance your competencies through ongoing unit-based and corporate educational and professional development opportunities.
- Supporting intake tasks for the outpatient mental health program, including building bridges, urgent care clinic and other programs as assigned.
EDUCATION
- Child Youth Worker diploma required; Baccalaureate Degree in Child and Youth preferred.
- Eligible for membership in the Ontario Association for Child and Youth Councillors.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 1 year recent experience providing individual, group, and family supports in a mental health setting.
- At least 2 years of experience working in a child and youth mental health setting required.
- At least 1 year experience working with children and youth presenting with acute mental health needs required.
- Recent experience working in a day treatment setting an asset.
- Experience working with school avoidant youth an asset.
- Recent experience with serious mental illness and high-risk children and youth required.
- Demonstrated ability to assess children and youth in crisis.
- Experience with behavioural programming for children and youth.
- Demonstrated excellence in problem solving techniques, conflict resolution, and flexibility.
- Demonstrated motivation to pursue educational goals.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highlyskilled interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to implement plan of care.
- Demonstrated ability to participate in program quality initiatives and measurements including the collection of workload statistics.
- Demonstrated understanding of accountability-based practice.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good work and attendance record required.
- Must be willing to work shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekdays, weekends) on our inpatient child and youth mental health unit when day treatment program is closed.
- Must be willing to provide coverage in Building Bridges and Inpatient unit when there are no referrals in the emergency department.
