Under the direction of the Supervisor of Environmental Monitoring and Reporting, the Environmental Technologist assists in evaluating safety and environmental conditions, and initiates protective measures as required, at 33 closed and 1 active landfill, as well as adjoining lands specifically related to landfill gas and liquids, surface water, and groundwater.
As the Technologist 2 - Environmental you will:
- Monitor environmental conditions at and around landfills. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Providing assistance in developing monitoring standards; carrying out inspections, sampling and testing programs.
- Maintaining environmental instrumentation.
- Monitoring environmental conditions at and around landfills, including instrumentation, and remedial works.
- Preparing reports and taking immediate action, or recommending any actions required.
- Monitor buildings and underground structures, detection and ventilation systems. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Monitoring to provide safe conditions in buildings and underground structures at and around landfills. This includes testing for methane gas, testing and monitoring of ventilation and detection systems.
- Testing related to development or building permits.
- Evaluating data relative to assessment criteria.
- Reporting on the condition and the performance of systems.
- Document and maintain data – database management. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Maintaining all drill log data, investigations and borehole stratigraphy information.
- Monitoring gas results, leachate and piezometer level data, settlement and thermocouple data.
- Updating database records and preparing ground water piezometric elevation plans.
- Maintaining the ground water quality database, and preparing depth – pressure graphs of stratigraphic sections.
- Preparing plans and updating drawings with all new data, and updating databases with water quality and leachate analyses and the sampling record.
- Assist the Supervisor of Environmental Monitoring as required. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Monitoring the actions of, and providing direction to, consultants and contractors.
- Participating in budget preparation and control.
- Responding to inquiries.
- Perform subsurface investigations and installs environmental instrumentation.
- Maintain equipment (including field vehicle) and material inventory for the environmental program.
- Other duties consistent with classification, as assigned. These include, but are not limited to:
- Participating in landfill gas utilization investigations.
- Participating in Solid Waste Services Division business.
- Acting for the Supervisor of Environmental Monitoring, as required/assigned.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Graduate of a Civil Technology Program from a recognized Institute of Technology and eligible for membership in C.T.T.A.M. (Certified Technicians & Technologists Association of Manitoba) as a Municipal or Environmental, Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.).
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience relevant to the requirements of this position.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of the engineering principles required to perform the duties including soil mechanics, hydrogeology and statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a computer and navigate in Windows based applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other applications as required.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and contract documents.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
- Ability to plan, carry out and report on work with a minimum of supervision.
- Knowledge of small engines, generators, pumps, and pumping systems.
- Mechanical aptitude in the use of tools and the maintenance of equipment.
- Ability to organize and plan effectively, and set priorities and goals.
Conditions of employment:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.
- Must have and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s Licence.
- Physically capable of performing the duties of the position: lifting and carrying bulky heavy equipment, performing field investigations, installing instrumentation, and sampling.
