Company description
Blue Sea Foundation exists to give charities the power to fundraise successfully. We’ve done that by creating a new category of fundraising: Franchised Fundraising Events (FFE). We build, own and operate a growing portfolio of national fundraising events so charities don’t have to build them from scratch. Today, hundreds of charities across Canada and the United States use our events to engage their communities and raise tens of millions of dollars annually for their work.
Behind all of it is WAVES, our proprietary event management ecosystem. We’ve spent years building and refining WAVES to power virtually every part of our operation, including events, partners, fundraising, communications, finance, reporting and more.
Now we’re building what comes next.
Role description
Our new Senior Software Engineer will have the opportunity to help build something new without starting from zero. We have years of proven workflows, real world data, operational experience and hard earned lessons to build on.
We’re looking for a seasoned Django engineer who can help us build the simplest, strongest system for what comes next. Someone to help us avoid the temptations of second system syndrome as we rebuild the beating heart of our company.
In this position, you’ll report to the Director of Engineering and work closely with leadership to plan, design, and implement a robust modern web app that will form the backbone of Blue Sea's day to day operations. Your decisions will shape the codebase and practices inherited by future team members.
Duties Include:
- Lead the hands-on development of an application supporting multimillion-dollar charitable fundraising events, making practical architectural decisions and establishing foundations future engineers can confidently extend.
- Work with leadership to clarify business requirements, challenge assumptions, define priorities, and deliver functionality incrementally.
- Build features from end to end, including data models, migrations, business logic, views, forms or APIs, authentication, and authorization.
- Design and optimize database schemas and queries, including constraints, indexes, transactions, data-integrity safeguards, and safe production migrations.
- Write and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests; review and refactor code; and support containerized deployments, security, logging, monitoring, and production troubleshooting.
- Bring healthy skepticism to complexity, helping us distinguish what we could build from what we actually should build.
Why you want work here:
- You love charities and you want to play a supporting role in their success. Think Obi-Want to Luke Skywalker, except you stick around for the whole trilogy.
- Put another way - you believe helping charities is more important than generating wealth for some FAANG or VC.
- You thrive in the ambiguity of a new project. Question marks give you endorphins.
- You can make smart tradeoffs, keep things moving, and hit your deadlines.
- You love the smell of good code in the morning.
- You know that complexity is easy to add and hard to remove. You have the confidence to ask whether something should be built before deciding how to build it.
- You want to work somewhere you're included in conversations beyond your immediate role, including what next year's celebratory hoodie should look like and, occasionally, where we're ordering lunch.
- You adapt quickly, think deeply, and work well independently without disappearing into a cave.
Work Remotely
- You'll be expected in-office 2 days per week, but otherwise can work remotely.
