Introduction and Purpose of Position
The goal of a workplace Health and Safety Officer (HSO) is to maintain a safe working environment for all employees of a business. Health and Safety Officer is responsible for implementing occupational health and safety regulations in the workplace. The HSO’s main aim is to prevent accidents, injuries and work related illnesses in the workplace by promoting safety awareness among employees in the workplace.

Key Responsibilities

Manage employee orientations, onboarding and training requirements, from a H&S perspective

Inspect organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident, health hazards and make recommendations for improvement on a regular basis

Prepare and investigate reports of incidents and injuries, claims and appeal process (i.e. WSIB/Worker’s Compensation)

Work with plant managers and WSIB to submit and implement claim reporting, return to work activities and modified work programs

Prepare and submit materials for insurance

Perform Risk Management and Analysis

Weekly/monthly compliance reports using various software

Provide/deliver new and updated H&S information, policies, procedures and resources, to all staff (Plant and Office)

Work with operational staff to develop, implement and enforce organizational Safety Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Participate as the Chairperson on Joint Health and Safety Committee, schedule and attend meeting and responsible for minutes.

Coach, direct, support all staff with H&S

Assist in employee compliance and regulatory standards (Highway Traffic Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, etc.…)

Work with HR to identify other related safety concerns

Maintain/Update safety files, employee records and training databases

Available for after hours emergencies, as when needed

Perform other duties as required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Must have:
- Possess a valid driver’s license (0 demerits)

Previous experience working in a unionized environment

5-7 years of experience in a Health and Safety in an industrial manufacturing environment

Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and industry safety standards

Infrastructure Health and Safety experience (IHSA COR an asset)

Computer knowledgeable (MS)

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in all areas of work

Ability to clearly communicate infractions and deliver repercussions

Self-starting proactive individual who can work well independently and in a team environment

Able to work well under pressure and multitask in a fast-paced environment
Assets
-
College Diploma or University Degree, in health and safety
-
2-3 years of experience employee coaching
-
Previous experience with JHS Committee in a chairperson capacity

AZ Driver’s license for training purposes
-
Certified Standard First Aid / CPR

Any related heavy machinery training/certification\
-
WHMIS

Bilingualism (English/French)
