Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking an experienced Media Relations Advisor for our Office of Communications and Marketing.

The Media Relations advisor is responsible for proactively promoting and protecting the university’s reputation by developing and executing media and public relations strategies and plans. Working collaboratively with the communications and marketing teams, the advisor will devise strategies for showcasing the university brand, innovation at the university, corporate communications/affairs initiatives, issues management and government relations through various media outlets.

Your goal is to deliver strong earned coverage to promote the MacEwan brand, vision and mission through creative pitches to traditional and new media. You’ll maintain and grow the university’s list of media contacts and influencers and build and develop professional relationships with these individuals.

You are a creative thinker and understand the value of media and public relations as part of communications and marketing strategies.

Above all, you understand the power of storytelling and narrative.

You have excellent writing skills and are an experienced and talented public speaker. You will act as the university’s media spokesperson when required and will work with senior leaders to prepare briefs and media statements.

Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in Public Relations or Communications, or a bachelor’s degree plus a diploma in Public Relations or Communications, along with a minimum of five years’ experience in organizational media relations and communications.

The successful incumbent must:
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of media, including local, regional and national media outlets, online properties and industry-focused outlets, along with their operational procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable of issues management and crisis communications.
  • Have advanced client consulting and coaching skills.
  • Possess critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Have strong research and writing skills.
  • Be knowledgeable of Canadian Press guidelines.
  • Be able to work flexible hours and be available after hours for media inquiries.
  • Possess exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Be able to work as a team player with minimal supervision.
