Purpose of the Role
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and basic upkeep of agency facilities, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors, clients, and staff. The role supports the daily health and operational integrity of Payukotayno workspaces, including public areas, meeting rooms, and program spaces.
This position reflects the Omushkego principle that shared spaces must be cared for in a way that honours all who enter them, particularly children and families seeking safety and support.
Core Responsibilities
1. Cleaning and Sanitation

Perform daily cleaning of floors, restrooms, kitchens, windows, and high-contact areas using approved methods and products

Restock supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and cleaning materials

Empty waste and recycling bins in accordance with health and environmental standards

Conduct periodic deep cleaning as scheduled or requested
2. Facility Readiness and Safety

Maintain entrances and walkways free from debris, snow, and ice

Ensure cleaning materials and equipment are safely stored and maintained

Report facility damage, equipment issues, or safety concerns to the Supervisor – Facilities and Logistics

Support safe use of facilities by monitoring hazards and following safety protocols
3. Operational Support

Set up rooms for meetings, events, and gatherings including moving tables, chairs, and supplies

Assist with receiving supplies and helping prepare spaces for seasonal programming

Maintain logs of cleaning routines and supply needs for ordering
4. Team and Cultural Participation

Collaborate respectfully with administrative and facilities staff to support shared space use

Assist in preparing spaces for cultural gatherings, feasts, and community visits

Attend relevant training related to health and safety, cleaning protocols, or cultural practices
Required Qualifications and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent
-
Experience in janitorial, custodial, or facilities support roles
-
Knowledge of cleaning practices, WHMIS, and basic workplace safety

Physical ability to perform duties including lifting, bending, standing, and working indoors/outdoors
Equivalency will be considered. Experience caring for community or ceremonial spaces in First Nations contexts is an asset.
