Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join the Highway Design Branch. The Highway Design Branch plans, designs, manages and protects the province’s highway system. The Branch provides design, standards, specifications, policies, technical evaluation, guidance and approval. The Branch’s roles also include research, assessment, management, and review of development affecting the transportation system. These allow for a safe, reliable and efficient highway network.

Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geological Engineering
- Must be registered or eligible for registration as a professional engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba
- Must be able to visit to work sites within the province by ground and air, which may require overnight stays (possibly in a camp environment)
- Must meet the physical demands while visiting work sites including carrying/lifting up to 50 lbs, bending/twisting, continuous walking or standing, working outdoors in both winter and summer in extreme temperatures, and working in and around vegetation and sharp objects
- Must be able to work away from the office for extended periods as required
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Experience in geotechnical, pavement and materials investigations for construction and research projects.
- Experience in geotechnical design methods related to construction, maintenance and preservation of highway and civil projects.
- Experience preparing technical documents including geotechnical reports, design and construction standards, engineering manuals and guides, test methods standards, and contract specifications.
- Experience managing and overseeing project activities including planning, design, and scheduling and preparing documentation in support of projects.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Effective interpersonal skills to develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
- Demonstrated ability to learn and work proficiently with appropriate industry software tools and technology to successfully complete assignments/projects.
Desired:
- Master’s degree specializing in geotechnical engineering is preferred
- Experience in analysis and design of drainage works including hydraulic design of culverts, channels, and drainage ditches and erosion control measures.
Duties:
Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Geotechnical Engineer performs engineering activities from planning through preliminary design, detailed design and construction; provides specialized engineering advice & technical guidance; oversees geotechnical and drainage investigations; performs engineering analysis and design for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of highways and related transportation infrastructure. The Geotechnical Engineer conducts product evaluations, develops specifications, prepares and presents technical reports, conducts seminars, and provides technical guidance to department staff.
