ANIMAL CARE ATTENDANT (Part Time)
Multiple Shifts Available:
Every Saturday 9am - 5pm and Sunday 8am - 4pm
Every Sunday 8am - 4pm and Monday 8am - 4pm
Friday to Monday covering vacations
The Animal Care Attendant is an integral part of the shelter and is responsible for providing all aspects of care and support for the animals in the care of OMHS. Working closely with the Registered Veterinarian Technicians (RVT’s), the ACA will ensure that the care and welfare of all animals and the shelter are maintained in accordance with OMHS expectations and protocols.
Key Responsibilities for this physically demanding position include but are not limited to:
- Provides clean water and fresh food to the animals daily
- Cleans and disinfects all dishes, bedding etc. used by the animals daily
- Cleans and disinfects all cages and assigned rooms within the shelter daily
- Removes animal feces and cleans area regularly
- Restocking of supplies
- Provides physical activity (dog walking, etc.) environmental enrichment, and socialization to the animals within the shelter daily
- Provide animal care as needed, including bathing of cats & dogs, nail clipping, ear cleaning etc
- When required, may receive animals brought in by APS or the public and logs all necessary information
- Monitors the health of and observes the temperament of animals; reporting any odd or disconcerting behavior(s) to the RVTS’s
- Inside work environment can be noisy. (hearing protection provided upon request)
- Outside work in all-weather elements.
Qualifications and Experience:
- High School Diploma and/or College as applicable
- Ability to lift 50LBS maximum; repetitive heavy lifting of objects daily
- Must be reliable; ability to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays
- Valid G license with a clear Drivers Abstract
- Clear Criminal Background Check
- Shelter experience an asset
- Understanding of care and husbandry for cats, dogs, and small animals
- Canine behaviour knowledge an asset

- Demonstrated ability and comfortable handling animals with varying temperaments
- Flexible and adaptable approach to changing situations
- Demonstrated written & oral communication/interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to work within a fast paced, at times a stressful environment
- Demonstrated ability to work with little supervision
- A demonstrated compassion towards people as well as animals
