Role Description
We are seeking a full-time, experienced Site Superintendent with a strong background in heavy civil construction, sewer and watermain installation, and municipal road reconstruction.
The Site Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and operation of active construction sites, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with project drawings, specifications, municipal requirements, and company standards.
The successful candidate must be capable of independently managing field operations, supervising company crews and subcontractors, coordinating equipment and materials, resolving site issues, and maintaining strong communication with the Project Manager.
Previous hands-on supervisory experience in heavy civil construction, including sewer and watermain work and municipal road reconstruction, is mandatory. Candidates without relevant heavy civil experience will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently manage and supervise company crews and field operations
- Direct and coordinate site crews, operators, labourers, subcontractors, and suppliers
- Plan and organize daily site activities to maintain productivity and meet project schedules
- Oversee excavation, underground servicing, sewer and watermain installation, grading, road reconstruction, and related civil construction activities
- Coordinate work in accordance with municipal requirements, approved drawings, specifications, and project standards
- Read and interpret civil drawings, site plans, profiles, specifications, and construction documents
- Establish and verify elevations and grades using appropriate surveying and grading equipment
- Shoot grades and maintain accurate elevation controls throughout construction
- Prepare and maintain field measurements and information required for as-built drawings
- Coordinate materials, equipment, trucking, deliveries, and subcontractors to prevent delays
- Monitor site productivity, manpower, equipment usage, and progress against the construction schedule
- Communicate daily with the Project Manager regarding progress, upcoming work, site conditions, scheduling, and potential issues
- Identify and resolve field problems quickly to minimize delays and project disruptions
- Ensure work is completed to required quality standards and correct deficiencies when identified
- Maintain accurate daily site records, including manpower, equipment, quantities, deliveries, work completed, and site conditions
- Participate in site meetings, inspections, and coordination meetings as required
- Coordinate with municipal inspectors, consultants, engineers, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders
- Ensure all required inspections are coordinated and completed
- Enforce all company Health & Safety policies and applicable construction safety regulations
- Conduct or participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, inspections, and hazard assessments
- Maintain a safe, organized, and professional job site
- Uphold AEGC Ltd.'s standards of workmanship, safety, productivity, and professionalism
Mandatory Requirements
- Minimum 3+ years of supervisory experience as a Site Superintendent, Foreman, Lead Hand, or similar field leadership role in heavy civil construction
- Previous experience with sewer and watermain construction is mandatory
- Previous municipal road reconstruction experience is mandatory
- Experience working on projects involving municipalities and municipal inspectors
- Strong knowledge of excavation, trenching, underground utilities, sewer, watermain, grading, granular placement, and road construction
- Ability to independently manage field crews and daily site operations
- Ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings, profiles, specifications, and contract documents
- Ability to shoot grades, establish elevations, and verify construction grades
- Experience collecting field information for as-built drawings
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing and heavy civil site operations
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to direct, motivate, and manage field personnel
- Thorough understanding of construction Health & Safety requirements and site compliance
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Excellent verbal communication and organizational skills
- Valid Ontario G driver's licence
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel to project sites throughout the GTA and surrounding areas
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, services, catch basins, maintenance holes, and related underground infrastructure
- Experience with full-depth municipal road reconstruction projects
- Experience coordinating with municipalities, consultants, engineers, inspectors, and utility companies
- Experience operating or working closely with excavators, loaders, dozers, rollers, and other heavy civil equipment
- Knowledge of Ontario civil construction standards and municipal specifications
- First Aid, WHMIS, Working at Heights, and other relevant construction safety certifications
Important Applicant Requirement
This is a heavy civil construction position. Previous experience supervising sewer and watermain work and municipal road reconstruction is required.
Candidates whose experience is primarily in residential construction, renovations, homebuilding, ICI interiors, or general building construction without heavy civil experience will not be considered or contacted.
