The Lindsay Cemetery Corporation is seeking a dependable, compassionate, and hardworking Grounds Custodian to join our cemetery and crematorium operations team.
This is a hands-on position that combines cemetery grounds maintenance, equipment operation, interments, crematorium duties, building maintenance, and customer service. The successful candidate will take pride in maintaining our grounds and facilities while providing professional and respectful service to families, funeral homes, and members of the community.
Because this position involves working directly with families and funeral professionals, professionalism, discretion, compassion, and attention to detail are essential.
Key Responsibilities - Cemetery Operations & Interments
- Prepare graves and niches for casket and cremated remains interments.
- Safely open and close graves and niches and accurately identify burial locations.
- Operate equipment including backhoes, tractors, trailers and other cemetery machinery.
- Install and set burial vaults, crypts and related structures.
- Prepare and maintain gravesites, including turf covers and site safety.
- Assist funeral directors and families during interments.
- Receive and process required documentation from funeral homes and families.
- Ensure caskets and urns are handled safely, respectfully and professionally.
Crematorium Operations
- Receive deceased individuals from funeral homes in accordance with established procedures.
- Properly identify and document all caskets and containers received.
- Safely place caskets and containers into designated storage areas.
- Assist with crematorium operations, including the operation of cremation equipment.
- Process and package cremated remains with care, accuracy and dignity.
- Maintain clean and orderly crematorium and processing areas.
Cemetery Grounds & Landscaping
- Maintain the appearance and overall beauty of the cemetery grounds.
- Perform turf maintenance including mowing, sodding and seeding.
- Perform horticultural work including pruning, trimming, planting and watering.
- Maintain roadways and other cemetery infrastructure.
- Assist with seasonal snow clearing and related maintenance.
Memorial & Foundation Installation
- Accurately locate and identify sites for memorial and foundation installations.
- Install bronze, flat and upright memorials and related foundations.
- Operate appropriate machinery and hand tools.
- Assist with foundation preparation and pouring.
Buildings & Equipment
- Clean and maintain crematorium and chapel facilities.
- Clean and maintain cremation and processing equipment.
- Perform routine cleaning, maintenance and minor repairs to machinery and equipment.
- Assist with opening and closing the cemetery water system and perform necessary maintenance.
- Notify the Property Manager when cemetery or cremation supplies need to be ordered.
Team & General Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Property Manager to ensure daily cemetery and crematorium operations are completed safely, efficiently and professionally.
- Complete time-sensitive and rush tasks as required.
- Maintain communication with management regarding operational matters.
- Be available for overtime and on-call duties as required.
- Assist with other operational tasks as needed in a small-team environment.

- The ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate the highest ethical standards.
- A willingness to work overtime, weekends and on-call shifts when required.
Physical & Work Environment
This is an active, outdoor, hands-on position. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a variety of weather conditions and performing physical tasks associated with cemetery maintenance, interments, landscaping and equipment operation.
The position also involves working around deceased individuals and supporting families during emotionally difficult circumstances. Respect, professionalism and discretion are required at all times.
Employees are expected to maintain a clean, professional and presentable appearance when interacting with the public.
