INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ENGAGEMENT OFFICER
NorQuest College is seeking an energetic and motivated individual to engage with our International Students and help drive student success.
Reporting to the Team Lead, International Student Supports & Retention, the International Student Engagement Officer (ISEO) assists with the planning, organization, and implementation of events associated with international student engagement. Strategic focus will be placed on actively engaging international students and stakeholders, through the development, planning, and implementation of programs and events that align with the NorQuest International Strategic Plan; in particular, those which provide international students with an exceptional experience at NorQuest College.
As part of the international student support and retention team, the ISEO will play a leadership role in promoting quality international student services, in addition to designing and implementing new programs to meet the ever-changing needs of international students at NorQuest College.
The ISEO role will require the incumbent to develop strong relationships with colleagues across the College, with the goal of ensuring that the student engagement experience (from pre-matriculation to post-graduation) is seamless. The incumbent will equally be required to devise strategies to develop and maintain effective systems and accurate records, for use in monitoring and measuring international student engagement and success at the College.
The ideal candidate for the ISEO position shall be energetic, well-organized, and possess the ability to follow through on a variety of projects with conflicting priorities. They shall work collaboratively with International Student Advisors, International Student Recruiters, as well as with other internal and external stakeholders, who are of strategic importance to NorQuest International’s ability to connect with students.
Program Development & Management
Actively lead the development, management, and promotion of the International Student Peer Mentorship Program.
Actively lead the development, management, and promotion of the On-campus International Student Work Experience Program.
Collaborate closely with various NorQuest departments to actively manage and achieve the objectives of the Finding Your Centre: An International Student’s Guide to Academics and Immigration Program.
Perform annual reviews of all scholarships, bursaries, and awards offered by NorQuest International.
Promote awareness of all new and existing programs to new international students.
Event Planning & Management
Lead the planning, delivery, and evaluation of new international student orientations at the beginning of each term, with the objective of enhancing new international students’ experiences at NorQuest College.
Coordinate and lead programs such as cultural events, academic success events, and other engagement activities (Canadian cultural immersion events, Diwali festivals, Lunar New Year festivals, student field trips, etc.).
Plan and organize workshops and webinars aimed at strengthening international students’ success.
With guidance from the Director, NorQuest International, plan and organize social events for visiting groups or organizations associated with NorQuest International (government and international delegations, etc.).
Perform other event planning and management duties, as required.
Pre-Arrival & Post-Graduation Engagement
Facilitate and lead pre-arrival initiatives that ensure a smooth transition for new international students (e.g., pre-arrival webinars, Facebook chats, etc.).
Design and implement new programs aimed at addressing current gaps in accommodation and settlement services provided to international students.
Represent NorQuest International during Airport Welcome events co-hosted by Edmonton’s leading post-secondary institutions (PSIs).
Implement specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based (SMART) goals to achieve the objectives of NorQuest International’s Alumni Engagement Strategy.
Perform other pre-arrival and post-graduation engagement duties, as required.
Communications & Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as lead personnel for NorQuest International, vis-à-vis liaising with internal and external stakeholders during engagement initiatives for international students.
Utilize excellent communication skills to work and engage with students and employees of all backgrounds, and at various hierarchical levels within the College.
Possess strong ability to draft reports and implement recommended changes to annual event and program agendas.
Assist with capturing, sourcing, and editing content related to international student activities, for use in a variety of promotional materials.
Utilize social media tools, such as Facebook and Twitter, to actively engage with current international students and alumni.
Use effective communication strategies to engage diverse audiences, including the ability to address large or small groups, in both formal and informal settings.
Perform other communications and stakeholder engagement duties, as required.
Bachelor degree in a relevant field
A working knowledge of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) policies and practices pertaining to international students is required. Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) or Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) designation not mandatory but is desirable.
Valid Class 5 driver’s license (AB) or its equivalent and access to reliable transportation is required.
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience developing, delivering, and managing social programs and activities for a diverse audience of traditional and non-traditional international students.
Minimum two (2) years’ experience planning and coordinating events for students, preferably international students; formal education in event management would be an asset.
Strong command of English (reading, writing, and speaking); fluency in a second or third language (other than English) is desirable.
Experience working with international populations; knowledge on international student issues, with inter-cultural communication strategies to address them.
In-depth knowledge of Alberta’s post-secondary educational system.
A strong ability to develop and tailor international students’ events, programs, and engagement initiatives to the international student life cycle.
An acute ability to draft and summarize reports, rationales, monthly newsletters, and other business-related communications.
Mastery of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Spreadsheet), PeopleSoft (Student, HR, and Finance), Google Suite, and related databases.
Clear demonstration of ability to multi-task and apply organizational skills to meet deadlines in an environment with multiple priorities.
An ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, and cross-cultural sensitivity; including the desire to work with a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and levels of authority.
Established problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to anticipate problems and put forth timely and appropriate solutions.
Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of a team, with the ability to exercise high levels of independence, judgement, and initiative.
Exceptional customer service, crisis de-escalation, and interpersonal skills; ability to work with minimal supervision.
In consideration of NorQuest International’s commitment to serving international students enrolled within evening and week-end cohorts, and in order to cater to departmental events and audiences during non-traditional working hours, the International Student Engagement Officer shall, when necessary, be required to work in the evenings and week-ends. A flexible working schedule, one that accommodates the needs of NorQuest International and those of the International Student Engagement Officer, is envisioned for this position.
SALARY: $59,380 - $77,106 commensurate with education and experience. This position includes immediate participate in our comprehensive benefits and pension plans.
