The Ecosystems and Plant Sciences (EPS) Functional Group works with industry and government to develop, test, and deploy new technologies and processes that will help build commerce in Alberta, while reducing environmental impacts. We are seeking a research associate for a one-year term to provide support in the delivery of biosensor research. Working under the direction of scientists, the successful incumbent will be responsible for (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Assist in the design and fabrication an impedimetric biosensor for detection of plant pathogen
  • Improve the efficiency of the biosensor by lowering the limit of detection
  • Evaluate biosensor performance in field, greenhouse and growth chamber experiments
  • Identify and enumerate plant pathogens in vitro and in planta in a laboratory setting
  • Prepare and present written and oral project reports and publications
The successful candidate will possess the following skill sets and qualifications:
  • A PhD in chemistry, microbiology, engineering, or related field
  • Experience in biosensor design, modification, and evaluation
  • Experience handling antibodies and plant pathogens, designing and fabricating nanoscale biosensors
  • Proficient in nanostructure characterization using methods such as SEM, EDX, XRD, DRS, and AFM
  • Experienced in surface functionalization and passivation to immobilize antibodies
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication, including preparation of refereed scientific reports
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability
  • Able to perform delicate work
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Valid driver’s license and able to travel between work sites as required
