About us
Large Tutoring Inc. is a small and growing business run by a UBC Chemical & Biological Engineering graduate committed to bringing top-level education to families in the Metro Vancouver area. Our students have attended prestigious institutions such as NYU, UC Berkeley, UBC, UofT and much more. We strongly believe in a personalized approach to teaching as this allows us to focus on meeting the unique needs of each student in order to help them achieve their academic goals.
All of our tutors are not only expert teachers who are dedicated to the success of our students, but are also energetic individuals who make learning fun. We believe the best teachers are individuals who are professional but also enthusiastic about teaching as this encourages students to engage with the material in ways that promote learning.
To help our students navigate growing complexities in their courses, we ensure that they know exactly where the solutions are coming from. We don’t ask “what did we do?” but “why did we do it?” By understanding the “why”, we ensure that the next time around, and then the next, students will be able to apply their knowledge to solve the problem, independently.
At Large Tutoring, we value being adaptable, trustworthy, qualified, modern, and friendly. If we share any of these values then you should consider applying!
Job Description: Music Tutor (Piano and Violin)
Are you passionate about music and want to share your knowledge with youths from Grade 5 to 1st year University? We are looking for individuals who are capable of conducting 60-90 minute tutoring sessions (sometimes 2+ hours) for either piano or violin lessons either at the students’ homes, online via Zoom or a mutually agreed upon location.
Ideal candidate(s) would start late June working up to 10 to 15 hours a week with students over the summer and potentially into the school year of September 2022. Currently, the majority of our lessons are taking place through Zoom, but many will return to in-person. We are looking for candidate(s) who have the technological set up to work remotely from home, but who are also willing to transit to students’ homes or public locations (we do have protocols in place for this). The chosen candidate(s) will also be required to complete a Police Information Check (PIC) for the vulnerable sector. The candidate must be responsible for the full cost of completing this check. The PIC is the same requirement parents are required to complete before volunteering at local schools. This is a contractor position, as such, the wage will be $28.00 - $32.00 an hour depending on the level of education and experience. The wage is for time spent tutoring students plus any time spent helping students review documents and assignments (provided it takes over 15 minutes). Often we conduct introductory meetings with students and their parents and occasionally we have meetings for the tutor team. These meetings will be paid at a non-premium wage of $16.00 an hour.
We’re looking for role models who share their passion for music, who can interact effectively through online technology such as Zoom and in-person, and who can support, encourage and instill energy and enthusiasm into the student. Someone who strives to make learning fun and has the ability to connect with their students. At Large Tutoring Inc. our philosophy ensures that students do not merely memorize situations, but understand why they made the choices they did. In doing so, we ensure our students are able to excel in similar but different circumstances.
The successful candidate(s) will tutor students on a mutually agreed upon curriculum, but will also adjust the lesson plan to cover additional concepts the students require explanation on. The candidate(s) will also complete progress reports for their students at the end of every month.
Our students are our number one priority. We make an effort to get to know them and understand their unique academic needs. At Large Tutoring our tutors understand their students and how best to support them. The successful candidate(s) must be able to show commitment, honesty, professionalism, organization, and enthusiasm when interacting with students and others in the company.
We also strive to accommodate all of our tutors to the best of our ability and ensure that they receive the support that they need to be the best they can be.
Role Description:
-Teach a variety of students varying from grade 5 to 1st year University students for 10 to 15 hours a week.
-Teach students how to play the piano or violin and master musical concepts.
-Be available for introductory meetings, Zoom video conferences, and phone calls with prospective students/parents.
-Be able to help students learn how to read music, including the basics of rhythm, tempo, melody and harmony.
-Conduct rehearsals for musical performances
-Create brief lesson plans, “brush up” on any topics that will be covered in lessons, and assign homework materials for students (not worksheets, but suggested practice routines for the student, etc.).
-Willingness to answer students’ questions via email outside of lesson time under appropriate circumstances and timing (not to excessive amounts).
-Be available to work during non-traditional hours. Since many students have school requirements, sessions may run into the evening (up to 10:00 PM) and/or take place on weekends. This will depend on the students on your roster and their availability. All sessions only take place at mutually agreed upon times and locations between the student and the tutor.
-Adapt, encourage and provide feedback to students (and to parents) to achieve real life results.
Requirements
-Higher Level education in Music (including but not limited to: Bachelor’s of Music, Grade 10 or above on The Royal Conservatory, etc)
-Live or be able to come to Vancouver for in-person lessons
-Extreme levels of enthusiasm, patience, kindness, and empathy for teaching and for students across diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. We also love bubbly personalities that contain enough energy for 2!
-Background in tutoring, teaching or mentoring is ideal (but desire to help and to succeed is also important).
-Experience working and willingness to work with students with learning difficulties or disabilities (ie. Gifted Learning Disabled, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, ADD, ADHD, or students on the spectrum).
-Excellent communication skills - in person and online - we want students to have fun!
-Work well independently and the ability to facilitate a group discussion
-Strong multitasking and organizational abilities. Scheduling is something that the tutor is largely responsible for and keeping your schedules organized and up to date is crucial to your effectiveness as a teacher.
-Must have a computer/tablet with video conferencing capabilities, as well as a quiet space to video conference with their students OR be willing to do mostly in-person lessons.
-Flexible schedule and mindset. Our students often require a flexible schedule and we try our best to meet their needs while still keeping these accommodations within reason.
We look forward to hearing from you! We hope you bring passion, energy, enthusiasm, and fun to this position. Please send a cover letter and resume to apply.
Note: Priority will be given to applicants who can also teach other subjects including Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or English during September.
