Horizontal Directional Driller, FTTH
Chemco is seeking experienced Horizontal Directional Drillers to support the installation of underground infrastructure for fibre optic and associated distribution components for connection of residential and business around Powerview-Pine Falls, Point Du Bois, Bisset, Nopiming and Lac Du Bonnet areas.
This full-time seasonal field role requires hands-on HDD experience in residential and municipal settings. The successful candidate will be safety-focused, reliable, mechanically inclined, and able to work with a field crew to complete underground fibre optic installations safely, efficiently, and to project specifications.
What You’ll Do
- Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment, including Vermeer HDD units or comparable equipment, to install underground fibre optic and related distribution infrastructure.
- Complete drilling, locating, conduit installation, pullback, and related underground construction activities.
- Read and follow project drawings, bore plans, utility locates, permits, and site-specific instructions.
- Work safely around existing underground utilities, heavy equipment, traffic, and residential properties.
- Assist with potholing, daylighting, entry and exit pit preparation, conduit handling, and other crew activities as required.
- Operate vehicles, trailers, hand tools, powered tools, and construction equipment in a safe and professional manner.
- Inspect, clean, and maintain vehicles, tools, drilling equipment, and related field equipment.
- Participate in daily toolbox talks, hazard assessments, tailboard meetings, and site safety planning.
- Maintain accurate daily records of drilling activities, equipment use, deficiencies, and completed work.
- Follow Chemco, client, municipal, provincial, and site-specific safety and work procedures at all times.
What We’re Looking For
- Minimum two years of experience operating Vermeer HDD units or similar horizontal directional drilling equipment.
- Experience with drilling and/or locating for underground fibre optic, telecommunications, utility, or civil infrastructure work.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Valid CSTS and WHMIS certifications.
- Valid Ground Disturbance Level 2 certification.
- Ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions and physically demanding field environments.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform general labour duties when required.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
- Strong commitment to safe work practices, utility protection, environmental awareness, and quality workmanship.
- Ability to work out of town, including potential weekend and night work during the build season.
