SALCBC (South Asian Legal Clinic of BC) is a leading intersectional feminist organization dedicated to advancing access to justice and equity for South Asians across British Columbia. Our mission is to be the primary point of contact for the South Asian community confronting justice-related challenges. We provide low-barrier, multilingual, and culturally sensitive legal information, education, advice, and advocacy. We are currently seeking a dedicated Full-Time Family Lawyer to join our dynamic legal team.
We are looking for a Family Lawyer with 1-3 years of experience in family law and child protection. The ideal candidate will:
- Have practical experience managing family law cases in BC Supreme Court and Provincial Court.
- Demonstrate proficiency in representing clients in alternative dispute resolution processes.
- Possess a solid understanding of the BC Family Rules of Court, Provincial Court Family and Child Protection Rules of Court, the Divorce Act, the Family Law Act, and the Child, Family and Community Service Act.
- Exhibit strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving work environment.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and community partners.
- Show a proven track record of working with low-income and diverse South Asian communities.
- Understand social justice issues and systemic barriers affecting the South Asian community, particularly those facing economic hardship.
- Be a self-starter, highly motivated to support clients comprehensively.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal information and advocacy on family law and child protection matters under the supervision of the Managing Lawyer.
- Develop and deliver community legal education and create relevant legal resources.
Qualifications:
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of BC.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, intersectionality, anti-racism, decolonization, and anti-oppression.
- Experience and training in culturally and trauma-informed practices.
- Proficiency in a South Asian language (Punjabi, Hindi, or Urdu) is highly desirable.
- Ability to travel as required; reliable transportation is essential.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
