The Augustana Faculty of the University of Alberta enrolls approximately 1000 undergraduate students in baccalaureate degree programs on a picturesque residential campus in the city of Camrose, 90 kilometers southeast of Edmonton. Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor, the Assistant Supervisor/Head Chef is an important member of the Student Life team. She/he aid in providing leadership and direction in the operation of the department. Ensuring high quality meal preparation, innovation in menu development and commitment to strong customer service is key. Working with a team of 20 full time staff members as well as a complement of casual staff, the ability to bring a positive influence is vital. We are a diverse and inclusive campus and provide services to all students that live on and off campus as well as customers through our Dining Hall, Cafe and Conference Services.
Assists with supervision, scheduling and evaluating Food Services staff
Evaluates the outcomes for the day and delegates staff accordingly
Ensures staff have a balanced opportunity in food prep for different areas (eg. salad bar, desserts, and main course)
Assists in planning menus
Assists in preparing food and supplies orders
Ensures supplies for the next day are met according to the safe handling practices
Ensures the quality of the food prepared and appropriate and appealing appearance and taste
Provides ongoing direction regarding safe food handling
Works directly with students in order to meet special dietary needs of individuals
Ensures all equipment is functioning and appropriate for the Food Services area
Receives goods; inspects for damaged and spoiled goods
Red Seal Certification required
12 to 18 months of experience in cooking for large groups and banquets
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of applications
Knowledge of certain University of Alberta administrative structures would be an asset
Well-developed experience, good judgment and creativity in solving problems
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
A service-oriented philosophy with sensitivity to and respect for all students
Ability to work in a team environment
