Market 49 Fine Foods is a fast growing local food company specializing in chef created frozen and prepared meals made with high quality, locally sourced ingredients. As we continue expanding and moving our main operations to the Langley area, we are looking for an experienced and motivated JR Sous Chef to join our kitchen leadership team.
This is a hands on role for someone who enjoys both cooking and leading others. The Sous Chef will work closely with the Head Chef and ownership to help manage day to day kitchen operations, maintain quality and consistency, and assist with developing new dishes and weekly specials.
We are known for offering weekly specials and constantly introducing new menu items, so we are looking for someone who is creative, organized, and excited to help bring new ideas to life.
About the Role
The Sous Chef will support the Head Chef in all aspects of kitchen operations and will take the lead when the Head Chef is away. This role combines production, team leadership, recipe development, and kitchen organization.
You will play an important role in helping train staff, keeping production running smoothly, and ensuring every product leaving the kitchen meets our standards.
Responsibilities
- Assist with overseeing day to day kitchen operations
- Help supervise, train, and support cooks, prep staff, and packaging team members
- Lead the kitchen during shifts and in the absence of the Head Chef
- Ensure all food is prepared consistently and to company standards
- Assist with creating and testing new menu items and weekly specials
- Help maintain standardized recipes and production procedures
- Support production planning and scheduling to ensure products are completed on time
- Help manage food ordering, inventory, and waste reduction
- Ensure all Fraser Health food safety and sanitation requirements are followed
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen
- Work closely with the Head Chef and ownership to help grow and improve the business
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Sous Chef, Lead Cook, Kitchen Manager, or experienced cook looking to step into a leadership role
- Experience working in a high volume kitchen, production kitchen, catering, meal prep, or prepared foods environment
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Ability to stay organized and work efficiently in a fast paced environment
- Passion for food and interest in helping develop weekly specials and new menu items
- Strong understanding of kitchen operations, food quality, and consistency
- Experience with food costing, ordering, and inventory is an asset
- Food Safe certification is an asset, but not required. The successful candidate will be required to obtain certification after hiring, with the cost covered by Market 49 Fine Foods.
- Red Seal certification is an asset but not required
- Food safe is required, but after hired application may obtain one if not currently holding a valid one.
