MONTREAL, OR ANY OTHER WSP LOCATION IN CANADA
WSP is currently seeking a Legal Counsel to be preferably based in Montreal and work with our National Canadian Team. Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, this individual will be overseeing various claims, litigations and arbitrations and provide disputes resolution and claim avoidance support to projects across Canada. The position involves frequent contacts with internal and external stakeholders, management, insurers, as well as WSP affiliates and its parent company. This individual is to provide practical, high quality and timely legal advice while appropriately balancing risk management and commercial opportunities.
Oversee, conduct, and manage claims, litigations, arbitrations and disputes resolution within regions of Canada;
Conduct claim assessments, investigations and exposure assessment;
Instruct and retain outside defence counsel, coverage counsel, experts, arbitrators or mediators, as necessary;
Provide timely claim avoidance legal advice and project assistance to project teams throughout the project lifecycle;
Provide written and oral legal advice and opinions;
Draft and review legal documents;
Assess and provide advice on contractual disputes or claims;
Develop case resolution strategies or claim avoidance strategies;
Where applicable, provide legal support to WSP Shared Services;
Attend internal and external meetings;
Offer support on ongoing projects and give legal advice in any normal course of business situation when required; and
Complete any other task deemed necessary to support WSP with a legal matter and any other task usually assigned to members of the Legal Affairs & Risk Management Team.
Member in good standing of a Canadian Bar;
Common Law and Civil Law (Quebec Bar) training/experienced is preferred;
Bilingual (French & English);
1 to 5 years of relevant experience;
Strong understanding of project delivery models, contract lifecycle, project roles and responsibilities and WSP’s industry;
Engineering/architectural industry experience is preferred;
Effective analytical skills, creativity, judgment and risk management skills to lead dispute resolution efforts;
High level of organizational skills and attention to details;
Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision;
Ability to manage multiple time-sensitive projects concurrently;
Ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders as part of a multidisciplinary team;
Ability to present legal issues and options to senior management;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.LI-BK1
