Parker Johnston Industries is hiring a hands-on Manufacturing Lead Hand for our Calgary architectural sheet metal shop. This working leadership role combines machine operation, fabrication, quality control, workflow coordination, and continuous improvement.
The Lead Hand is responsible for directing the day-to-day work of a small manufacturing crew, mentoring apprentices, and ensuring each project meets established quality and production standards. The position reports directly to the Calgary Shop Foreman and works closely with the Manufacturing Coordinator on scheduling, project information, progress reporting, and production priorities.
Terms of employment: Permanent, Full-time, 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday - Friday
Salary: $30.00 - $35.00/ hr based on experience

Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the lead machine operator while performing fabrication and other hands-on production duties
- Direct and coordinate the daily work of a manufacturing crew of two to five employees
- Receive production priorities and management direction from the Calgary Shop Foreman
- Coordinate project information, scheduling requirements, and progress updates with the Manufacturing Coordinator
- Maintain Parker Johnston standards and procedures for quality control and ensure those standards are followed daily
- Organize workflow to support efficient production and reliable completion dates
- Train and mentor apprentices, operators, and future Lead Hands
- Identify production bottlenecks, quality concerns, and workflow issues
- Implement practical solutions within the authority of the role and escalate larger operational issues to the Calgary Shop Foreman
- Make routine day-to-day decisions required to maintain production flow and crew efficiency
- Provide daily progress updates and projected completion dates
- Ensure required production and quality-control paperwork is complete and accurate
- Work occasional night shifts during the implementation and training of future night-shift employees
- Assist with training the future Night Shift Manufacturing Lead Hand to ensure consistent standards and processes across both shifts
Requirements
- Sheet Metal Worker or Architectural Sheet Metal trade qualification
- Sheet metal manufacturing experience
- NC folder or brake experience
- Experience leading crews, coordinating workflow, and meeting production deadlines
- Strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship
- Ability and patience to train apprentices and less-experienced operators
- Comfortable making day-to-day production decisions independently while following the direction and priorities established by the Calgary Shop Foreman
- Able to attend off-site training at the Victoria, BC headquarters
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an industrial manufacturing environment
- Experience with twin-bend folders, de-coiling and slitting equipment, NC punching, or other sheet metal processing equipment
- Microsoft 365 experience, including Excel, Word, and Teams
- Lead Hand or supervisor training
- Carpentry experience
- Forklift experience
What Success Looks Like
Within six months, you are receiving projects from the Manufacturing Coordinator and executing the manufacturing work in its entirety with minimal correction from the Calgary Shop Foreman.
Your crew works efficiently, production flow is predictable and organized, quality issues are uncommon and addressed quickly, and cross-training allows employees to support multiple areas of production.
As production expands and a night shift is introduced, you help establish a seamless transition by training the Night Shift Manufacturing Lead Hand and passing on established quality standards, operating procedures, and production expectations.
