Staff Plus is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Designer – Automation for a leading electronics manufacturing company. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced mechanical designer with a strong background in industrial automation, custom machinery, and special-purpose equipment who is ready to take on a senior technical role.
You will lead the mechanical design of complex automated equipment from initial concept through manufacturing, integration, and commissioning, while providing technical guidance to other designers and working closely with engineering, controls, manufacturing, and customer teams.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design and development of complex automation systems and custom machinery.
- Develop automation concepts for assembly, inspection, testing, packaging, and material handling applications.
- Establish machine architecture, design direction, and mechanical solutions for assigned projects.
- Design complex mechanical systems using SolidWorks.
- Apply knowledge of robotics, servo motion systems, pneumatics, and industrial automation to machine designs.
- Lead design reviews and ensure equipment meets safety, quality, performance, and customer requirements.
- Perform engineering analysis related to machine dynamics, structural integrity, motion systems, and manufacturability.
- Take automation projects from concept and detailed design through manufacturing, integration, and commissioning.
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to Junior and Intermediate Mechanical Designers.
- Work closely with Project Leads, Controls, Manufacturing, Integration, and Engineering teams.
- Participate in customer meetings, present design concepts, and address technical requirements and concerns.
- Support manufacturing and integration teams with troubleshooting and advanced technical problem-solving.
- Contribute to project proposals through concept development, risk assessment, costing input, and labour estimates.
- Identify opportunities to improve design standards, engineering processes, and automation solutions.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
- 8-12+ years of experience in automation, special-purpose machinery, machine design, or a similar engineering environment.
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks and mechanical design.
- Strong experience designing automated machinery and complex mechanical systems.
- Extensive knowledge of robotic integration, servo motion systems, pneumatics, and industrial automation.
- Strong understanding of machine safety standards, risk assessment, and safe machine design principles.
- Experience taking complex automation projects from concept and design through manufacturing and integration.
- Proven ability to lead complex technical projects and provide direction to other designers.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
- Excellent communication, leadership, mentoring, and presentation skills.
- Comfortable working directly with customers and cross-functional engineering teams.
