The Research Assistant will assist in the collection of information that will enhance understanding of the clinical and cost-effectiveness of drug-gene testing for drug therapies for major depressive disorder. The project is embedded within the Pharmacogenomics for Depression project, which is comprised of several different streams of work that are working towards establishing whether these kinds of tests should become a routine part of care for patients with depression in BC. The incumbent will work within the School of Population and Public Health and at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology & Evaluation (C2E2) on this project that is being led by Drs Stirling Bryan and Jehannine Austin. The position will involve screening studies for inclusion in a rapid review, extracting information from the included papers into an Excel sheet, conducting a risk of bias and quality appraisal, and other tasks for the review. Additional tasks include searching for and summarizing literature as needed to support the informational needs of the lead modeller on the project.
The Research Assistant reports directly to and works closely with the Project Leads for the rapid review (Activity 2) and simulation model (Activity 3), as well as the Project Manager. The incumbent will interact with other faculty and research staff on Dr Stirling Bryan and Dr Jehannine Austin's project.
The Centre for Clinical Epidemiology & Evaluation (C2E2) undertakes research and training and provides evidence-based advice to advance a sustainable health system for British Columbians. C2E2 scientists and many of its staff, including this position, are part of the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH), which is in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.
SPPH is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.
The incumbent will assist in conducting a rapid literature review of quantitative research about the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of drug-gene tests for treating depression, as well as sourcing literature for a simulation model about the health outcomes and costs from such tests. Duties include:
1. Assisting in conducting literature searches, screening studies for inclusion, and in reviewing and assisting with the synthesis of literature and grey information
2. Communicating with diverse project partners and other relevant stakeholders
3. Assisting in planning research project activities, including organizing and documenting meetings
4. Supporting the preparation of reports, publications and presentations
5. Performing other related duties as assigned/or required
Reports to the Activity 2 and 3 Project Leads and Project Manager of the project. The incumbent may also take direction from Dr Stirling Bryan.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position works independently under general direction from the Project Leads and Project Manager. Project Leads should be advised of problems that have arisen or that can be anticipated. Errors in data collection could cause hardship to the project. Decisions regarding the collection of information can influence the ability to meet a major deliverable to the funder of the project.
Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted practices, involving freedom to select which methods are applicable in any given situation. The incumbent is expected to use sound judgment, initiative in conducting literature reviews and data extraction, and prioritize assignments to accomplish goals related to Dr Bryan's projects.
Errors may significantly impact both the clinical and academic reputation of the unit and could result in loss of funding, confidentiality breaches or delays in payment.
High School graduation. University degree in a related field preferred. Minimum of 1 year of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working in health-related field preferred. Ability to listen actively and attentively, and obtain clarification as required. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail. Ability to effectively use MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, R and EndNote at an intermediate level. Ability to conduct literature reviews using tools such as OVID or PubMed. Ability to gather, record, and organize information effectively. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
