Under the direction of the Program Director, provides clinical services to families and children/youth, utilizing a wraparound approach. Services provided may include counselling, case management, treatment planning, assessment, record keeping and data management, evaluation, facilitation, and liaison.
Child and Family Therapists in the Family Preservation Program may be required to be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, with standby pay per collective agreement.
Typical Duties Include
1. Counselling families and children/youth with an awareness and sound knowledge of, current and acceptable treatment modalities and practice. Facilitating client expression of needs/feelings.
2. Case management.
3. Leading, teaching and facilitating groups for parents/caregivers and children. Must be able to prepare curriculum and present in a professional and confident manner. Must be able to take advantage of therapeutic opportunities as they arise within the context.
4. Participating in assessment and intake meetings.
5. Gathering relevant historical client information.
6. Working in collaboration with client to establish goals that are relevant, clear and concrete. Organizing, recognizing, and relaying appropriately the implications of case material.
7. Appropriately administering assessments (on-site and in-home) to determine client concerns, problems, and case outcomes. Specifying case outcomes clearly and concretely.
8. Implementing intervention strategies consistent with client information and goals. Helping clients accumulate and interpret information.
9. Helping clients explore creative options (supporting clients to pursue appropriate internal and external resources).
10. Evaluating client progress with respect to goals.
11. Facilitating systemic resolution of concerns.
12. Appropriately recording, interpreting and using assessment results with client and team members.
13. Maintaining database and case files in a manner which is clear, timely, accurate and secure.
14. Therapeutically facilitating closure/transition of cases, including discharge planning.
15. Participating in team meetings with supervisor and treatment staff.
16. Sharing skills and competencies with peers, informally and via participation in staff in service.
17. Providing liaison with community partners.
18. Conveying knowledge and respect for the legal and ethical rights/vulnerability of clients and the agency.
19. Providing advocacy.
20. Consulting with other staff regarding client needs and options, especially as needed to ensure safety.
21. Fulfil all administrative responsibilities of the position with an understanding of accreditation and quality assurance requirements.
22. Attending school, hospital, community and other meetings as needed.
23. Other duties as required.
Academic and Experience Requirements
- Must possess a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology, Master of Education in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, (including a clinically supervised practicum providing counselling)
- Experience in providing counselling/therapy to families
- Broad knowledge of individual and family therapy, attachment theory, trauma informed practice, expressive therapy, and child and family development.
- Knowledge and Experience working with victims of domestic violence an asset.
Additional Skills and Abilities
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well as a collaborative team member, tact, sound judgment.
- Must be respectful of and knowledgeable in helping children and families presenting with significant needs, and from varied socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
- Must have the ability to manage a busy, multi-problem caseload.
- Must be computer literate and able.
- Must have a working knowledge of community systems including schools and child welfare system.
- Must have ability to teach psych-educational classes and lead counselling groups on a range of child management and treatment topics
- Must be able to perform all duties required, at the program site, in the community or in the family/caregiver home.
- Must be able to establish a working relationship and create a therapeutic alliance of clear boundaries with clients toward gaining clients' trust and confidence.
- Ability to analyze program effectiveness and make improvements where needed.
- Must behave professionally, dress appropriately.
- Must have ability to supervise students.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, with possible on-call requirements with pager.
- Must have a valid B.C. Driver's License. Use of own car required with mileage reimbursement.
- Must possess current CPI certification.
- Must possess current acceptable First Aid certification.
- Take and use feedback well, pursuing training to address deficits, showing diplomacy in all roles.
