Reporting to the Director, Accounting Lead IFRS 17, this role will develop and provide subject matter expertise to the IFRS 17 project team on the accounting and finance processes affected by the implementation of the IFRS 17 accounting standard. Working closely with the Manager, Accounting Individual Customer and the business unit finance teams the incumbent will analyze and document all current state accounting and finance processes affected by IFRS and work with the project team to build future state requirements. In addition, the incumbent will identify other initiatives within the Canadian Division that have intersection points and work with those project team(s) to identify issues and ensure that risks are mitigated, and solutions are delivered efficiently. This role will provide the successful applicant a truly unique opportunity to drive the implementation of technology, operations and process planning relating to accounting matters under the new insurance contracts standard IFRS 17 for the Canadian Division of Canada Life. Represent and stand in for the accounting leaders of the Canadian business units on the IFRS 17 project team
Analyze and document in detail the accounting process for all Canadian Division systems affected by IFRS 17
Work with a variety of stakeholders to create requirements for new accounting processes as required under IFRS 17 and the targeted state technology infrastructure
Participate as need on Canadian Division initiative project teams to analyze and assess the impacts, dependencies and required actions to ensure that the IFRS 17 and the corresponding business initiatives are delivered with accounting process consistent with the future state design
Identify and collaborate to resolve the impact of final IFRS 17 guideline details on existing accounting policies and processes
Support the company’s global IFRS 17 financial reporting process by interpreting and providing feedback relating to how the company’s policy position decisions will impact the IFRS 17 reporting process.
Indirect leadership of 2-4 team members through the testing and remediation phases of the new process implementation
Work collaboratively with the business unit finance leaders to transition new IFRS 17 processes into the business as usual production environment
Qualifications and Competencies:
Professional accounting designation (Chartered Professional Accountant)
Minimum 5 years of proven accounting experience in a financial reporting role
Experience working in complex corporate structures
Experience with financial reporting systems and reporting software
Advanced knowledge and efficient use of MS Office suite such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
Demonstrated ability to conduct and interpret quantitative and qualitative analyses through applying professional judgment and strong analytical skills
Experience fostering a strong team environment and providing leadership and coaching to employees
Excellent organizational & time management skills, with ability to work through complex issues and tight deadlines
Effective oral & written communication skills to effectively articulate complex concepts in a concise manner to varying audiences
Ability to build strong collaborative partnerships to ensures consistency of approach across lines-of-business where relevant
