KHI Board Member
Kitchener Housing Inc. Board Members provide strategic oversight, governance, and stewardship for a community-based housing corporation responsible for delivering safe, affordable, and well-managed housing.
This is an exciting time in KHI’s evolution. The organization is strengthening its governance, modernizing operations, planning for long-term capital renewal, exploring opportunities for growth and expansion, and considering how housing services can better support tenant stability, dignity, and community well-being. Board Members will help guide this next chapter and shape the vision for KHI’s future.
KHI operates in a complex environment. The organization is responsible for an aging housing portfolio, significant capital needs, evolving tenant and community needs, public accountability, funding requirements, and long-term financial sustainability. Board Members play an important role in helping KHI balance its social purpose with responsible asset stewardship, risk oversight, and strong governance.
Board Members are expected to think at the governance level rather than the operational level. This includes approving strategic direction, monitoring organizational performance, overseeing risk, supporting sound financial stewardship, and ensuring that KHI has the policies, structures, partnerships, and leadership needed to fulfill its mandate.
Board Members are expected to attend approximately five in-person Board meetings per year and to review materials in advance. Board Members are also expected to sit on at least one Board committee and participate actively in committee work.
Ideal Board Members bring sound judgment, community commitment, integrity, and an ability to work collaboratively while asking thoughtful questions. Experience in governance, affordable or community housing, finance, law, construction, asset management, human resources, social services, community development, municipal systems, risk management, growth planning, service innovation, or organizational leadership would be valuable.
This role is a good fit for someone who cares about affordable housing, understands the importance of good governance, and wants to help shape a stronger, more sustainable, and more ambitious future for community housing in Kitchener.
