ADDICTIONS COUNSELLOR (GE-NAAD-MO-WIT)

SERVICING SERPENT RIVER, MISSISSAUGA & THESSALON FIRST NATIONS

Wanna join a dynamic team? We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our Niigaaniin team providing Addiction services under our Ontario Works program.

A. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor (or designate), the Ge-Naad-Mo-Wit provides support to those Niigaaniin community members, family, and/or team members who are engaged in employability development, but struggle with addictions, by teaching them how to modify their behaviour with the intention of full recovery/full employability. Because Aaniish Naa community members are susceptible to relapse, the program works with them on an on-going basis.

B. QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:
College Diploma in Addictions Counselling with a minimum of 5 years’ work experience in the addictions field;
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience with GAIN SS and Q3, URICA, CAGE and ERS;
Minimum of two (2) years’ experience using ADAT (Admissions and Discharge Criteria and Assessment Tools);
Experience in staff supervision and program administration;
A clear Criminal Reference Check applicable to the responsibilities of this position; and
A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

Knowledge and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of the issues facing individuals with substance abuse/addictions concerns and of relevant support modalities;
Thorough understanding of the impacts of addictions on the individual, their family members and the community;
Knowledge of case management and documentation practices;
Excellent communication and presentation skills;
Excellent analytical skills to assess client needs/barriers, to develop and revise care plans, to monitor client progress and to monitor and evaluate the program and outcomes achieved;
Demonstrated leadership, coaching, motivational, interviewing and mentoring skills;
Ability to work in a small team environment and support the needs of the team members;
Ability to set priorities/meet deadlines; meticulous attention to detail and accuracy;
Ability to operate a computer and use Excel, MS Word, and PowerPoint; and
Ability to use Catalyst, the provincial drug and alcohol treatment information system, would be an asset.
C. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Intakes

Complete CAGE as the initial screening tool,
Conduct URICA and GAIN SS and determine most appropriate services based on the GAINSS score;
Conduct the MMS when required;
Provide referrals to other service providers based on scoring of GAIN SS and or MMS;
Determine if the applicant is eligible based on the assessments and intake interview;
Consent forms are completed as well as the Rights & Responsibilities;
Complete the Long Form for Catalyst;
ERS is conducted; and
Client is assigned a case number and paper chart is opened as well as in Catalyst.
Provide Treatment Referrals

Assist community members to identify their need for treatment programs;
Liaise with treatment programs;
Complete treatment program referrals;
Complete Admission and Discharge Criteria and Assessment Tools (ADAT) if required;
Assist community members to meet treatment requirements;
Liaise with community agencies and supports;
Assist as required with transportation arrangements for community members to and from treatment programs; and
Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment programs.
Facilitate Addictions and Grief & Trauma Sessions

Develop and facilitate addiction-related group counselling programs, i.e. Structured; Relapse Prevention and/or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy;
Facilitate Grief and Trauma group counselling programs;
Facilitate one-on-one sessions when deemed appropriate;
Collaborate with community partners when developing programs;
Prepare program evaluations and analyze results; and
When required, complete referrals to more supportive services.
D. WORK SITE LOCATION

The Ge-Naad-Mo-Wit Central will primarily travel between the communities being serviced; Thessalon First Nation, Mississauga First Nation and Serpent River First Nation.

The Ge-Naad-Mo-Wit’s work site locations will also be within the participating First Nations and primary office space will be provided at 473 Hwy 17 W, Cutler ON.
