Full-time – 35 hours per week. Monday to Friday. Eight-week Contract
Position Purpose summary:
To assist in the operations of collecting and processing donations to the Foodbank and the Thrift Stores, practicing good stewardship of our donated resources.
At the Reception Desk
Interact with the public both, face to face and on the phone
Respond appropriately to challenging individuals
Operate a database
Cooperate with co-workers in scheduling Reception Desk staff
In the Caseworker duties
Work privately, one-on-one with clients as directed by Supervisor.
Establish trust with the clients
Determine what the client may be in need of besides food (i.e. financial counselling, life skill development, substance misuse counselling, housing)
Refer clients to other agencies, in cooperation with Supervisor, as required by client
Treat clients with love, dignity and respect.
In the Warehousing department
Build food hampers
Cooperate and communicate with, and direct, food bank volunteers in the sorting and organizing of food and non-food items.
Store food safely (i.e. according to proper minimum and maximum temperatures of cooler and freezer).
Make daily temperature record reading and record accordingly
Help with warehouse organization, hamper distribution and communication with other receiving agencies.
Lift and move heavy boxes of food
With Farmers Market food reception
Work with Farmers Market vendors in receiving close-dated food (which will no longer sell)
Be able to drive The Salvation Army’s cube van (truck) to pick-up product from the Farmers Market and deliver it to the food bank.
Coordinate receiving, inventorying, proper storage and distribution of such food items.
Must meet the requirements outlined in the Canada Summer Jobs Program
Be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident
An understanding of and support for the Mission Statement of the Salvation Army in Canada
Excellent customer/donor service ethics including the ability to deal with the public in a friendly manner
A proven ability to work in a team setting as well as a willingness to take personal initiatives
The ability to adapt to change and interruptions to a normal work routine, and work in a fast-paced environment.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
A valid BC class “5” license with appropriate certification and proof of a clean drivers abstract
The ability to maintain confidentiality.
A willingness to adhere to a dress code of modesty, neatness and cleanliness
Demonstrate excellent people & communication skills – verbal & written
Demonstrate excellent organizational skills
Display ability to energetically, positively, and effectively direct and take direction
Demonstrate basic computer skills
The successful applicant must have, or be willing to obtain, a criminal record check, clearance from the National Abuse Registry and be bondable
Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:
Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
