Litigation Legal Assistant
Location: North York, Ontario
Work arrangement: Possible hybrid after an initial six-week period
About the Firm
We are a civil litigation firm located in North York, near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue. Our office is accessible by subway. We are seeking an experienced litigation legal assistant to support two lawyers. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative firm and take on greater responsibility as the role develops.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Compiling, organizing and finalizing court materials, including pleadings, motion records, application records and factums;
- Filing court materials through the applicable online court portals and uploading materials to Case Center;
- Assisting with the preparation of affidavits of documents and documentary productions;
- Maintaining calendars, diarizing deadlines and managing file lists;
- Scheduling meetings, court attendances, examinations for discovery and other proceedings, including coordinating with court reporters;
- Preparing prebills and client accounts;
- Staying current with court directions, filing requirements and practices across Ontario’s various court regions;
- Collaborating with the firm’s other legal assistants on larger projects and providing backup support during absences; and
- Taking on additional responsibilities based on the candidate’s interests, abilities and desire to learn and grow within the firm.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- At least five years of experience as a litigation legal assistant. Construction law experience is an asset but is not required. We will consider candidates with less experience where they are otherwise a strong fit;
- Experience preparing and filing court materials;
- Experience using Case Center, the Justice Services Online portal and the Ontario Courts Public Portal;
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines;
- Careful attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
- Experience with eDiscovery software, which is an asset but is not required; and
- A Legal Assistant or Law Clerk diploma, which is an asset but is not required
- Some dictation through Phillips
- Soluno (now Action Step) docketing/account software considered an asset but is not required
Work Arrangement
The successful candidate will work on-site full time during the first six weeks to support training and integration with the firm. After that period, the firm’s hybrid-work policy will apply if you prefer, with two-three scheduled days in the office each week.
