Summary:
The Transitional Support Worker, under the direction of the Manager of Muskoka Programs/Supervisor of Ethen’s Place, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Alex’s Place/Ethen’s Place transitional housing site. This includes but is not exclusive to; greeting visitors, scheduling appointments, discharges for the residence, crisis intervention, housing support, life skills training, community referrals, and advocacy.
Accountability/Team:
Transitional Support Workers are under the supervision of the Manager of Muskoka Programs/Supervisor of Ethen’s Place, or the Operations Director in their absence. As a member of the relief team, this position attends monthly team meetings.
Location:
The Alex’s Place Transitional housing site is located at 49B Pine St, Bracebridge, Ontario. Ethen’s Place is located at 175 West Street South, Orillia, Ontario. This position may require travel to other sites to attend trainings.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain confidential and accurate records within the program in accordance with government guidelines including records, logs, reports, and statistical information.
- Assume responsibility for the transitional housing site when working alone.
- Work shifts independently that may be overnight, weekends, or holidays as scheduled.
- Follow all agency and department protocols, policies, and procedures.
- When changing shift with an incoming worker ensure that they are fully informed of any participant concerns at the site.
- Answer phones and greet visitors as required.
- Report any problems or concerns to the Manager of Muskoka Programs/Supervisor of Ethen’s Place.
- Provide participants with support, advocacy, and referrals to external resources. These include; Legal Aid, Ontario Works/ODSP, mental health support, housing, community agencies, etc.
- Provide participants with information and support including; crisis intervention and life skills training.
- Manage crisis situations.
- Ensure programs operate with the mission, vision, and values of the society.
- Ensure standard operating procedures are maintained during assigned shifts.
- Maintain close working relations with government and social agencies with whom the society conducts professional relations.
- Work within the scope of the job description.
- Collaborate with community partners to provide programming and workshops as required.
- Work closely and receive direction from the Manager of Muskoka Programs/Supervisor of Ethen's Place.
- Attend meetings (internal and external) and training programs as required.
- Represent Elizabeth Fry Society Simcoe Muskoka in a professional manner at all times; maintaining a positive, cooperative, supportive attitude, and appearance.
- Partake in Agency events as required, including but not limited to, Elizabeth Fry week, all-agency meetings, clean up days, chores, etc.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be able to work days/nights/weekends/holidays with reasonable availability.
- Shifts are offered on a pick-up basis; you are required to work 2 shifts every 60 days at minimum.
Education/Experience:
- Degree or diploma in social work, social service work, sociology, criminology, psychology, or equivalent in training and experience.
- Complete Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Non-violent Crisis Intervention.
- Current certificate in First Aid and CPR.
- TB test.
- Valid driver license and vehicle.
- Minimum 1 year experience in a residential setting.
- Experience working with youth who face multiple barriers such as poverty, isolation, lack of mobility, difficulty accessing programs and service, physical isolation, discrimination, criminalization, and homelessness.
Knowledge:
- An awareness of issues faced by youth in rural communities.
- An awareness of systemic causes youth homelessness and Housing First practices.
- Commitment to the principles of social justice including recognizing the value and dignity of all persons irrespective of culture, status, gender, age, education, appearance, beliefs, or contribution to society regardless of ability.
- Ability to work with clients who present moderate to severe mental health challenges.
- Strong crisis intervention skills.
- Trauma-Informed Care.
- Naloxone Trained.
- Knowledge of community resources.
- Human-Trafficking trained.
- Proficiency in the use of computers for word processing, presentations, data collection and management, email, and internet.
- Bi-lingual in French and English is an asset.
